Going to be ordering some blank DVD's..

DVD-R is an older format and generally considered to be more compatible. DVD+R is apparently more "advanced".

The actual technical difference is in the way the discs are written and formatted.

BUT. The differences are so small it's hardly worth the bother of choosing. For 9,999 times out of 10,000 it's going to make absolutely no difference.

I've used both and never really noticed any difference. Most modern drives will work with either equally well. For older readers DVD-R is probably more compatible, think the way DVD+R works is slightly different to the DVD standard therefore doesn't have the DVD logo on them, they have the RW logo in a square box instead.

Quoted from here:

"The DVD-R & -RW media formats are officially approved by the standards group DVD Forum (the DVD logo). The DVD Forum was founded by Mitsubishi, Sony, Hitachi, and Time Warner."

"DVD+R & DVD+RW formats are not approved by the DVD Forum standards group, but are instead supported by the DVD+RW Alliance (the +RW mark). The DVD+RW Alliance is supported by Sony, Yamaha, Philips, Dell, and JP."

;)

PS. Yes, Sony supports both :)
