First thing to say here is that I hate controllers. I am clumsy with them, but most of all they tend to aggravate my joints something rotten. I have some hyper-mobility in my fingers, which can cause pain with anything requiring gripping/pinching.

I have used an Xbox 360 controller a bit, but the last time I had a two hour session with one (even though it was with a slow-paced game) my hands ached for days.

Even apart from that, I am at a loss as to how you're supposed to use the sticks and buttons at the same time without weird hand contortions and pressing buttons with the inside of a kuckle or the edge of a digit.

The thing is, so many games now seem to all but demand you use a controller. I can't go on with Yakuza 0, for instance, without one.

Do any controller connoisseurs have any recommendations for the most erogonomically comfortable ones? I'm thinking one that allows a relaxed grip and doesn't need the thumbs to stretch too much. Preferably with good compatablity.

I've not really venturered out of original Xbox One or PlayStation controllers.

For best compatibitly you're better off with something Xbox based (eg Xbox One controller).

However, Yakuza 0 is a Steam based game and I have managed to get a PlayStation 4 controller working with Steam (as should a PS3 controller I seem to recall). That said, you can use ScpToolKit to install the PS3/PS4 controller to make it compatible with most games (I seem to recall it makes Windows think it has a Xbox 360 controller plugged in instead)

OC has this offering on their site:

personally I’ve always found the Xbox controller more comfortable than the PlayStation. I have large hands so the Xbox one is a much better option. I’m not sure with your condition if there will be a perfect controller out there for you. Perhaps regular breaks, giving your grip time to relax may be the way to go?

Cheers, guys. So it looks like I need Xbox compatabilty for the best chance of actually getting things to work without faff.

I was thinking I might need some sort of modified version from another manufacturer, rather like the Razer one. But... just looking at the thumb-stretch needed on that one makes my joints ache! I really thing I'm after something that allows a soft, neutral position for the thumbs, almost where they'd fall at rest.

Last game I played with a controller was Persona 4, so the controller was just resting in my hands for long periods, and even then just two hours of playing played havoc with my joints. :(
