Going to New York - cheap CPUs ?

absolute cod shi.... buy it and bring it through, absolutely no problems on a flight from NYC. i just got back, along with a flight full of smelly hippys coming from india...no customs as per usual. ih8modem you have given odds of 1 in 40 of getting checked...and if u do get caught claim you are nackered and got the wrong queue. they not gonna fine you for sommin so trivial...!

When we go to USA we bring grand’s worth of stuff back to England in our luggage, never been stopped (not PC bits mind)
Next time i go out there i might buy a new motherboard and CPU if the exchange is right!

I have bought back all sorts of stuff from overseas & have never had a problem @ Heathrow. Landed @ Birmingham once & they made me open all my bags, I make about 15 trips a year in & out of Heathrow, never had a problem.

One way to possibly get around taking through customs is to post it to yourself from the USA.
I had a DVD Writer posted to me from the USA way back in 2001. A friend's dad broke PC's and this guy sent it to me!! No customs probs at all. Mark as a gift. No paperwork. And from the other side of the fence, Sent plenty of stuff overseas with no problems, although, was pretty much quids rather than hundred quid.

Obviously, if you had a known name to post from in the US, would be far easier, incase of any questions, as Customs have the right to open anything they like.

Just stick it in the suitcase and don't worry. I've brought back cpus, mobos, ram, power supplies you name it...even took a brand new case on as hand luggage once. Not lived in the UK for a while and always travelling for work and pleasure, so I fly around quite a lot. Never been stopped or checked once.

Checked 1 in 40 times? Jeez your seriously unlucky!

Just make sure you don't stash any worthwhile gear in with your drugs, and you should be ok. :p

Could always get one of the larger battery clapped out mobile phones, hollow out the inside face of the battery for a storage compartment, and stick a CPU in there. You have to switch the things off during a flight and in the terminal until you clear passport/customs anyway.

Something like an old Psion 3a you could get maybe a dozen CPU's inside the case too.

But seriously, post the things to yourself as a gift from over there is best - do them insured too, it's as cheap as posting parcel stuff within the UK (in January it cost me $15 to ship a motorcycle fuel pump, filters, and fuel lines from Californication - the package got to the UK address in 3 days).
