Going to quad core

Can't be much more help I'm afraid. After the HT change CPUZ reported it as a Phenom II X4 B50 with 4 cores and threads. The temp monitors stop working once its unlocked.
Are you overclocking at all as mine couldn't clock as far once unlocked.

I also tried it without changing HT and it still booted. Well after ticking the number of processors box in msconfig boot options, it showed up as x4 but only by name designation. It still seems to be dual core.

I've put it back to 550BE and overclocked to 3.6Ghz so far.

I think, but am not sure, that superpi only uses 1 thread. Try wprime :)

But if I had 4 cores unlocked, wouldn't it say so in cpu-z, and shouldn't there be an option to change to '4' in 'number of processors' in msconfig boot options?

Yes. Unfortunately I had no luck with my old 550, it would unlock until I tried converting films/music, and then it just locked up :(
