Going to Uni...

use the loan to buy a car

Depends where you are, for me it would have made absolutely no sense to buy a car as pretty much everything within Dundee is walking distance for me and the bus service/taxis to the out of town entertainment centres (cinema/bowling/ice rink etc) are all easy use. This means I'd have spent £X amount on a car that I barely use which when added together with insurance, road tax etc is quite a sizeable chunk of money.

Admittedly I probably spent that money (and more) on going out and general activities but the point is that I didn't put it into a car that I didn't need at the time. Once or twice a car would have been handy but I just asked a mate or I could even hire a car if necessary.

As to the not playing games, I have pretty much throughout uni, if everyone else is hungover then it is a good way to kill a few hours until something more exciting happens or you can easily set up a small network in your flat for multiplayer - a mini hub costs £20 max and is good for sharing files as well.

Obviously I plan to have a busy social life! That is not the issue tbh, I just wanted to know whether having a laptop is necessary. So from what the majority are saying i dont! So ill get a PC. And play games on boring weekends. Hurray! :D

Btw I already have a car. An old-style golden micra, haha... we call it the golden wonder :o. Hell it does the job and im no boy racer. A different decision whether to renew the insurance for uni. I'm thinking not, don't particularly want to be the designated driver all the time and anyway, it's wales, where would i go?

There we moments in my last year at uni when having a laptop would have been handy, but only at peak times towards the end of a semester.

What would have been handy would have been a smaller case, but purely for transport to uni and home again.

The only thing I'm glad I got, was a cheap laser printer, very very handy.

In my final year I didn't have that much time for playing games etc, but 1st year was lax as hell!

Im at uni now, and in my experience my laptop did not get used as much as my pc. I used my laptop for watchin dvds in bed and on the train, and dealing with my iPod and photos (its an iBook btw). The majority of the work i did was on my pc as they are just so much nicer to spend hours hunched over. Using a laptop makes your eyes hurt and your fingers get cramp from the small keys. A full size screen and keyboard is so much nicer. Always make sure where your typing is well lit ! Thats a top tip for you. The only time i use my laptop was when I went home as the pc @ home is crap.

Conclusion buy a pc, its better value for money.

I had a laptop pretty much all the way through my uni course, was only doing Information Systems but it did for me...
I can't think of a single situation where I ever needed the laptop, it was just handy to have in the house/flat. In lectures any notes I needed to take were always by hand. The desktop got far more use due to it's ability to cope with the latest games, it is the way forward!

Tell your mates to bugger off if they try pulling that on you. Its your choice, they'll understand you don't want to be a ferry. But make sure you claim moneys off them when giving a lift :)

I was doing fine at uni with my desktop till my final year when work got so tedious that any distraction would stop me working, in the end I had to buy the cheapest laptop I could find and uninstall the WiFi drivers, then I went and sat in the library unable to do anything other than work :)

I'm at uni now, and 12 months ago had the same decision. Ended up going with a desktop based machine (shuttle system), and never really looked back. Think we've only ever had 1 group project where we needed a laptop, but even then the department had computer facilities we needed, just that we wanted to sit outside in the sun
If it was me, I'd sink you money back into your rig and get a machine which is going to last well!

Cheers
Dan Chambers

P.s. Onme, may find the same in a few years.......
