Tell me about it! I'm learning to drive, too, and I was doing 20 in a 20 zone in a village with quite narrow roads and a lot of parked cars. However, despite all that and the fact I was approaching a mini-roundabout, a van decided to fly past me; it's very off-putting indeed.

I was told on my lessons that they were advisory with just the big 20 on the road and to slow down to like 25mph. Only when it was a big flashing 20mph sign on a pole outside a school was i told to take it right down to 20.

Seems utterly pointless. Make a road, make it have a speed limit. People are thick and walk out onto the road FOR CARS without looking so the road gets slapped with a crap speed limit that would be more suited to riding a bicycle.
I passed my test in january and still don't have a car, only thing making me want a car is the ability to get places/GFs and i love driving.........the cost, the crap speed limits, bumped on insurance cause of age, state of the roads around here and bad drivers all put me off(both through choice and financially) getting my own car.
If i can add to this argument; i have an 80 mile daily round trip to work and back - since the fuel started to rise and my wages hane not i have been keen to reduce my motoring costs...
I have inflated my tyres a couple of psi higher than recommended and decided to not drive any faster than 70mph - i am probably one of these people who do 60 in a forty by the way!
Since doing this i am getting nearly 100 miles more per tank !!!I kid you not, i couldn't believe the differance!
And the car?
Ford Ka
But on my bike? Now thats a different story
P.S
It only takes me about 10 mins longer per journey!
DISCUSS LOL
The most annoying thing is slip roads. On my daily commute there's a 2 lane slip road onto the A46 (which is generally always busy when I'm using it). 9/10 times people will sit in the outside lane of the slip road and creep up to 50mph to merge into traffic doing 70+
It wouldn't bother me if they stayed in the left lane I've taken to undertaking them now which is a very bad habit but at least I can merge onto the carraigeway much more easily and safely.
