ello..

just moved back to sunny stoke parental house and have been asked to get some wireless gear to set up a SIMPLE network for my comp and my dads laptop.

Basically, this aint my fortay, and hopefully someone in here can tell me what i need to ask for when i visit good old OCUK tomorrow. Something cheapish (around £60 if possible) and something that doesnt cut out every other second.

Theres some gear on special dealio this week.. is it any good?

cheers

Oh yeah, were on ntl if that matters ( cable vs wotever the other one is, blah, blah, blah :) )

you need a "cable" wireless router a card for you and a card for you Dad.

Cards are about 25 quid each routers 40ish or there abouts so..... +/- thats £100 quid

One think i know about NTL and routers, stick the NTL CAT5 wire into the router switched on, then turn on the router after or sometimes it wont pick it up..

thats my tip.

Im gonna sell my wireless router and PCI card soon lol only used for 2 weeks look on members market if u want a next to new set for 25% less +p&p :)

hmmm.. think i'm gettin it

if i buy the 'Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G SpeedBooster Broadband Router/4-Port Switch (NW-006-LS)', can i use this as a modem from which i can use a normal network cable to connect to my comp.. serving as the always on bridge thing, and then by a suitable dongle for my dads lap top for all the wireless shinanigans. Is this sounding right'ish?

cheers

or would this be better for me

'Linksys WKPC54G Wireless-G Network Kit for Notebooks (NW-007-LS)'

what sort of download rates would the laptop be getting in terms of kps. Its a 2 meg line that tops out in the 230 range

You wouldn't use it as either a modem or a bridge. You'd use it as a router, with the NTL cable modem you've got, and yes, you can connect as many machines as you have ports with ethernet, then more over the wireless segment.

Provided you weren't a fair distance away, or had a lot of interference, it should be running faster than 4Mbps. But as ever with wireless, the answer's a lemon, suck it and see.

Recommend D-Link DI-624 (plain not +), used it for about a year with an ntl cable modem connection & worked perfect. Just plug the two together then run the router Wizard & off you go. My DI-624's now working with an ADSL modem but not 100% happy :(

TIP: Get SAME brand parts, i.e. router & wireless dongles/etc so that your guaranteed 100% compatibility especially at higher rated speeds (e.g. 108Mbps).

Also, I have a USB WiFi dongle which, although I hardly use I've found very handy to just have around, e.g. old family PC which I like to keep-up-2-date, m8s who come around with non-WiFi notebook, etc

ah, i see.. i see

just had a look at the 'D-Link DI-624' bundle and i think its more than the folks can be bothered to spend at £120.. it aint going to be used all that often.

Anyone know if the:

'Linksys WKPC54G Wireless-G Network Kit for Notebooks (NW-007-LS)' is any good,

it looks more suited to their pockets ;)

Dlink DI-624M? Not the same as what I was talking about. Besides picked it up dirt cheap from a well known auction site ;)
