I never have breakdown cover and a few months ago my DSG gearbox let go big time. Luckily I was close to home so rang my local VW specialist who came to collect it. My other option would be as above take out cover there and then.
I'd never personally be without it because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle but realistically how many people on the hard shoulder are there through no fault of their own and not because the tyre pressures they never checked in their entire life finally caused a blowout or because that coolant leak they didn't even know they had as they never bother to check anything finally cooked the engine?
It’s a Vauxhall op I would get breakdown cover if i was you you can get cover for around £100 with any major company. If you happen to breakdown and get towed it will cost you more than that as most charge pence per mile on top of there actual fee.
I think they probably do bundle something with new cars, but I didn't buy it new.
Whatever breakdown might have been offered to the first owner didn't transfer to me.
Cancel your breakdown cover by all means to save a few quid but don’t come back bleating when and / or if the unexpected happens and you end up paying through the nose for breakdown recovery that’s not covered.
The only time I've tried to use it, when the clutch master cylinder broke on the Golf, they refused to send recovery until a van had been to see if they could repair it, which they estimated would arrive in a few hours (it was about 8pm at that point) and only then arrange recovery which could be another couple of hours. Told them not to bother and sorted it myself.
Depends on where you drive, if your not doing huge mileage and your commute isn't too far from home I wouldn't bother as you can get a local indie to come out.

I’ve always wondered about that scenario do they still insist on sending a van first before a recovery truck even if it’s obvious it’s not getting fixed at the roadside. What was there reasoning with your car? Because i very much doubt he was going to arrive and do a full clutch replacement at the roadside
I went without cover for years, then i went with AA the renew was a silly amount so i went to RAC again renew was silly amount, I now pay something like £60 and that's through Chris Knott.

"Sometimes we can fix clutches"
'There are pieces of it all over the floor'
"But they can sometimes fix it"
'Does he carry spares for a 14 year old Golf on the van?'
"No"
'He can't fix it then'
"He might be able to, I can't arrange recovery until someone has inspected it"
That was where I gave up and told them to cancel the van. I wasn't waiting hours to be told what I'd tried to tell them already.
Lol that must have been frustrating. It’s just a waste of a good few hours waiting for both to turn up knowing full well it’s not getting fixed. Think I would do the same thing in that situation and just organise my own recovery to save waiting.
