Gok Wan

I have never understood this programme. The women are so ashamed of themselves because they are fat, yet they go on tv naked! Wouldn't you atleast go on a diet before going infront of millions of people?

Just find it funny that it has taken a Gay bloke to reverse the effects of 20 years of female dominated fashion magazines making other women feel bad about themselves.

But havent you just contradicted yourself there? You say its no bad thing making people feel good, so why is it a problem if he wants to dress up a 30 stone woman? If she feels good about herself, what business is it of yours?

I couldn't give a flying **** what anyone thinks of me, I am full of confidence after watching Gok, isnt that all that matters? :)

Someone who weighs 30 stone shouldn't be told that they have nothing wrong with them - they are clinically obese and will suffer from disease which will kill them at a young age.

A woman who weighs 12 stone rather than 10 won't have any real health issues (assuming her diet isn't ****!).

Read my post again. I didnt say there is anything wrong with her, I said what if she feels good about herself. There's a difference :)

To me this just seems to be reassurance programme for women who are not happy about their bodies, telling them it's ok to be out of shape.

Instead of a program that effectively says "There, there it's alright" why not one that say "If you're not happy with it, do something about it"

A 30 stone woman shouldn't be made to feel "good" about herself, simply because she might then accept that weighing 30 stone is okay, and the associated health risks that go along with it.

Someone who has love handles isn't in immediate danger from heart/liver/other disease, someone who can hardly walk because they are so fat IS in danger :)

The program is about showing that your average woman, especially those in the 40s that with a bit of attention to detail they can both look good and feel good about themselves.

I also like the fcat that the program is a backlash against the stupid Size 0 culture and, again, point out that the older lady can look and feel good about herself. Sure you (or me) may not want to nail her but as long as she feels good I am sure somebody will.

Finally there is nothing wrong with being overweight (though not obese)
and it does not mean out of shape. My wife carries a little extra weight but can cycle 40 miles through the Peak District without too much fuss. Guess she is out of shape, eh? ;)

Perhaps people should just learn not to judge other people based on their arbitray values on what somebody should be like?

Whilst not defending somebody who has eaten so much pie they get to 30 stone it is a little odd that they aren't allowed to feel good about themselves. In fact feeling good about themselves could help reduce the pie intake and help them lose weight.

I am underweight and nobody preaches to me about the health risks. The same way that nobody tells me I can't feel good about hurtling down the side of a hill on a bike or clinging to a rock face despite the fact that both of those activities may have a negative impact on my health just the same way that being underweight or overweight or smoking may have a bad affect*

* Note it is far more likely that smoking and weight problems will lead to health problems but is not guaranteed.

I think its a good show. I don't watch it, but the misses goes crazy about it.

Fat ugly women cannot improve anything if they feel that crap and lowely. Accepting what they have been given and dressing appropriately can make someone feel a lot better. Showing them what to do and not to do with their figure/underwear/makeup etc.

Then they would be perhaps more inclined to do things to improve their health or image etc

Nothing wrong with women in their 40 etc getting fashion tips to help make themselves feel young, thats not what I'm on about at all though.

I'm also not about women who are happy with their appearance and just need help picking the right make up/clothes.

What I am on about is women who are unhappy about their bodies, why not get them to do something about their bodies by changing their diets exercise regimes, that would provide a far longer term and much better solution, and would help their confidence so much more than hiding it underneath a load of clothes.

The title overweight suggest that someone is infact overweight and if it is weight caused by fat then it's hardly ideal is it.

If they feel good about themselves then fair enough. If they go on a program about like this then chances are they don't, surely it would be better to get them to change their lifestyle than just giving them a makeover?

Nobody should have to preach to you about anything, you should take personal responsibility for your own body and if you're living an unheathly lifestyle then you should change it.

I agree. BSG and ST aren't quite as bad, but aren't far off. Get it all off the screen :)

Oh haha my aren't you quick with your ninja edits and conveniently missing off the end of my sentence, quite clearly I was giving BSG and star trek a thumbs up as examples of something good on TV !

BSG sir is the best thing committed to film ever, bar non, I think it will be many years before anyone tops it for sheer brilliance and story writing.

BSG to bloomin gak whatever his name is, is like comparing a 2 legged rabid dog to the space shuttle as a means of transportation.

Giddy up doggy, go go go, VS 0 -17500mph in 8 mins:cool:

Sure people can boost their confidence by losing weight and exercising and I would never advocate people just living a sedate lifestyle but sometimes people (especially women in the show) don't know where to start and don't realise that they can be made to look good. It is a start for them and some may want to go on to lose the weight but there is nothing wrong if they just want to keep looking good at the weight they are.

Being overweight is not the evil it is made out the be and you can live and active and productive full life carrying extra weight. It certainly doesn't make you a lesser person the way the media (and some posters on OCUK) make it out. It also doesn't mean you cannot look sexy and be attractive to the opposite sex.

As for carrying weight being far from ideal the actual concept of idea (or normal) when applied to a person is so arbitrary as to have no real point. If they had the Internets back in the 17th Century then the current Size 0 or even Size 6-10 trend would have been described as less than ideal as it was not the done thing for a woman to be skinny.

As above the makeover boosts self esteem and can be the push they need to move on or not as they may be happy the way they are after being shown that they can look good.

I don't lead a unhealthy lifestyle, far from it as I cycle to work and at the weekends for pleasure and spend a lot of the time in the mountains. The point was that the stigma associated with being overweight (ZOMG Health!) does not seem to apply to the other end of thee spectrum. Double standards as per usual. Welcome to the World!

I know you were Mr Squiggle, but you dislike How To Look Good Naked and attack it in your post, and in the same breath you laud some sci-fi crap that would bore many people to tears.

Because some of the women arent that overweight but just have a negative body image. He does an amazing job and the testamant to that is to see their husbands eyes light up and see what their missus can look like.

Imagine being married to someone for 20 years and they let themselves go, he gives them the confidence to make themselves feel good about themselves and look good too. Im sure most guys would rather see their other halves dressed nice and sexy and confident as opposed to some large baggy sweat shirt and un-sure of themselves.
