This converstion has loomed amongst friends for quite awhile, so in order to end the dispute (Which is the better game), I went out and bought Perfect Dark today (I had sold it previously). They guy in shop even asked me which was better as some kind of test, and my reply made him almost cry with frustration. Seems its quite the divider!
For the longest time I have campagned that Goldeneye has and always will be the far, far superior game. Everything about it was just perfect (aside from the hassel of frame rates *sigh*), Perfect Dark somehow took all the single player elements that made Bond awesome... and wrecked it. Well, this was how I remembered it... so I have just played for a couple of hours to see what I thought.
I was absolutely right on the single player, perfect dark is hugely boring in comparison. Perhaps it helps unfairly that bond is obviously based on a film, but PD has such a wafer thin plot each level seems to have 'text book' written all over it. And why on earth is there so much lighting that drops the framerate, aghhhhhhhhhhh!
Of course... the reason why both are still played today is the multiplayer... and I think this is where perfect dark manages to catch up. Bots, more custom options, and slightly smoother gameplay give me the feeling that once I have everything unlocked and all weapons, perfect dark will be the better multiplayer experience. Just.
But... Bond will still be number one for me! What do you think?
