Goldring ns1000 problem

I recently read through a couple of posts here about the Goldring ns1000's and I decided to give them ago for use with my ipod and pc. Anyway, I am very impressed by both the sound quality and the comfort, I prefer the noise cancellation off and to use them with a Fiio E5. Thank you to everyone that posted their impressions of the ns1000's.

I seem to have a really annoying problem with them though and it's driving me up the wall  The left cup seems to make a clicking sound with the slightest touch to the back of the cup and also with certain head movements, such as yawning or quickly moving my head to the side. I have read about some people reporting a creaking noise, but this is definetly not a creaking sound, it is a definite click.

Has anyone else come across this or does anyone know if there is anything I can do other than send them back? Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat, creaking has gone with age, never had a clicking problem.

Slightly offtopic here but is the Fiio E5 the amp to get with these? I don't mind spending a bit more if theres better out there, I just have no idea what to look for in a good amp.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like I may have to send them back, I was hoping to avoid that though, I had to wait nearly two weeks for them to arrive. Do you know if it's easy to get the cushioning off them to have a look see?

Hutchy, I'm fairly new to using amps myself, so you're probably asking the wrong person. I find the using the ns1000's with the E5 and the noise reduction off gives a really good sound though. If you're after an amp, you may want to hold off until FiiO release the E11, it looks really good.

I got creaking on my first pair which actually got worse over time, I used to get clicks too as it appears one of the ear cups wasn't seated in the pivot properly and had room to move, giving this a wiggle seemed to fix the issue although it wasn't ever really that annoying, so you may well have a different cause.

My Goldrings don't make any kind of noise when moving or at any other occasion either.

They do make this slight calming noise over ambient when ANR is on. Am I right to think it's normal? There's no way to hear it over anything being played on the headphones.

Fiio E5 makes a slight hiss when set to max volume, it's much worse and very noticeable when charging thus I tend to unplug it and use ANR only then.

No creak or click for me. Mine are nice and solid.

My set are exactly the same Krugga with the hisses and noises when E5 charging.

It's EMI from the computer running down the usb cable.
There's a place selling e9 amp for £76 it's in hong kong but it's very safe as well known dealer who I have used loads of times only catch is can take a month to arrive.

Hmm if it is EMI from the PC I wonder if a USB charger device would alleviate that particular issue. I had one for Medusas so worth trying as the E5 always seems to run down whilst gaming.

If you do take them apart, will you take some pics of the driver :D

I've sent them back now sorry, there wasn't anyway to get the cushioning off without ruining it; not that I could see anyway. I just hope Play don't take weeks getting a new pair dispatched.

I've had my NS1000's for a year now and no clicking problems like you desribe,

The only problem I have is I find they hurt the top of my head after a while, I can really feel the steel band sticking in!!!!

The amplifier you use them with makes a huge difference to sound especially with NC on. Like any audio set-up it takes a good marriage of components and a marriage which suits you.

They sound a lot better through my headphone amp on my Audiolab 8000S than my PC soundcard.

Worth £50 but no more!

If they are worth no more than £50, then how is it one would have to spend well over £100 in order to better them, sound quality wise?

Maybe they are worth more than £50 then. They are the first proper headphones I've ever had but my Hi-Fi separates total around £5000 so I'm a bit spoilt when it comes to sound quality. They certainly don't sound as good as my system but I'd need to shell out quite a bit to match that kind of sound i.e. dedicated valve headphone amplifier etc.

Sorry to quote myself but I should add that I usually only use my NS1000's with my motherboard on-board audio, its been a long time since I plugged them into my Hi-Fi. So it's probably not fair to suggest they aren't worth more than £50!!!

Which leads me to think I should get a sound card as I've severe EMI with my pc front headphone port connected by a lead to the hd-audio on the motherboard. I tried to remedy this with a ferrite ring to no avail but a sound card might work.

To be fair they aren't worth more than £50, in contrast though almost every pair of cans in England isn't worth the money they cost. Across the pond prices are much more reasonable.

Dunno. I still maintain that you'd be spending £100-140 new to actually beat them for sound quality, but then I have a 3 year old+ set and it appears that there's been some cost-cutting (e.g. cable length and who knows what else) since then, plus worrying quality variation.

They stand up well against my Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros and Sennheiser HD600s, even coming out of several hundred quid's worth of amp. I expect them to last as long as either of the other two as well. If and when they do break, however, I'm not particularly fancying my chances of getting a replacement that's up to the same standard.
