Goldring ns1000 problem

Dunno. I still maintain that you'd be spending £100-140 new to actually beat them for sound quality

Yes, but as I said I doubt those £100-140 headphones are really worth that much. You know yourself that the mark-up un the UK is stupid, some cans from America in the same price range as the NS1000s would probably sound as good as. Over here though what was equivalent there is probably 2-3x the price.

Trust me, here in Ireland headphones aren't any cheaper! :p

Sorry, meant to put the UK, (now you'll say you live in Southern Ireland :p)

Are you sure you can get something sounding better for $70 ish (new) over in the US?

Something with similar sound quality in a similar price range? Yes I can do that. Can I beat the sound with headphones costing less? No.

£50 = ~ $80, and $80 will get you some decent cans in the US. What will £50 get you (outside of the DR150s and NS1000s) in the UK?

What something's worth is essentially what people are willing to pay for it. To me headphones worth comes down to whether you can buy better for the money or not. Most US companies don't ship headphones here so US prices are generally irrelevant.

Drop back about 3-4 years. DR150s were £60-70. HD555s were about £40-50. NS1000s were about £130 to £160. All change since then!

Goldring NS1000 retail at £53 ish atm, that is £44 without VAT (that you don't pay in many of the states and is not included in the prices).

$70 it is. Give me an example of better headphones in this price range. I think you may struggle.

The point being that even in the US it would be a bargain price for the Goldrings. They're $300 on the rainforest website (not that they're worth that much).

As I said before, similar price similar quality, I never claimed to be able to beat them for less or equal costs. Also I'm not going to accept the $70 claim, the NS1000s from Play are of diabolical quality. Superfi sell them for £60, less VAT, £48, hence my original up to £50.

At ~$80 you can get Sennheiser HD555s which are of similar sound quality. If you really want to get into being awkward we could say they are better as out the box the NS1000s do sound a bit pathetic and only shine when amped where the HD555s sound good without an amp.

Auraomega, I guess it's rather pointless you trying to comment on the NS1000s sound quality when (correct me if I'm wrong) I think you've only heard the confirmed substandard recent Play.com iterations.

The NS1000s give HD555s an good thrashing when it comes to sound quality. They're closer to HD600 (ignoring the fact that we're comparing closed with open).

I got mine from PLAY about a year ago for £50, do I have the good ones or substandard ones? Mine have never been faulty, no clicks etc. and they sound OK but I've never compared them to any other phones.

Is there a way to tell the difference? Numbers on boxes or something?

Do the substandard ones hurt your head like mine do? I must admit the top band feels cheap for 'good' headphones with the steel band not having much padding to it.

I only chose Goldring in the first place primarily because I have a cracker Goldring 1022GX Cartridge on my turntable arm. Now this is a piece of Hi-Fi but then it cost over 3 times as much as the headphones.

I should really go and listen to Dark Side Of The Moon on vinyl through the headphones then get back to you all about the NS1000's ;)

Having compared both one of the recent play ones that produces a problem and a superfi one that does have any issues, the boxes are exactly the same. The only tell-tale differences I could find were:

- cable length, play ones have ~1.6m cable instead of 1m
- creaking headband (e.g., twist the cans, do they creak when they cant turn any more or do they just solidly stop moving?)
- for me, bad sound distortion in the side with the battery

Interesting, my headphones do creak when you twist them. There's even a very small crack on the headband, I'll post a picture later.

I purchased them some 6-7 months ago from the jersey retailer. I guess they're made of cheaper quality plastic? It doesn't seem likely though as most people don't report any problems with them, ANR works great with my headphones and there's no other problems. I do tend to treat them harshly too, someone probably overstretched them and I didn't notice before.

Afaik the only difference between the "old" Goldring NS1000 and the new ones are accessories, that is the QED cable that is 1m long for more than a year now (I think) and used to be 1.8m, a different headphones case as reported earlier by Auraomega who had two sets of the headphones and possibly a different adapter as well. I doubt anything else has been changed though.

It's only the last few months that I've been hearing of any problems with NS1000s from Play.com. Hopefully older ones should be Ok.

Mines don't creak, just solidly stop, cable is 1m.

So must be the non-faulty ones, wish I could lessen the spring in the headband for my big head though :p
