Which ones do you guys use? Any specific ones or do you use what you find? Im currently in a dilemma. I usually buy the cheapest or just use the ones that i find but they tend to be really hard and given the dry weather it's rather difficult to stop the thing on the green and control the length of a shot.

However yesterday i found a Callaway (Black) HX 95 Tour ball, it was really soft and i was able to stop it on the green without losing any length. I have a feeling though that they are rather expensive just like the Titleist Pro V1's.

So, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced ball that is soft and yet is not going to feel like i've just chucked £3 down the drain everytime i lose one?

Well I guess it depends how good, and how rich you are!

But the one thing you shouldnt do is buy the cheapest hardest balls available.

Try something mid-priced like a Top Flite Strata. Still fairly soft and also long.

I just brought a box of 50 (yes I lose a lot :p ) Top Flite balls from ebay, they were grade A and cost about £15 - apart from the odd pen mark you can hardly tell that they are used. They play a lot better than the cheap Dunlop ones that I was using before.

hehe thanks for the replies :)

im "average" and not rich enough to spend £40 on balls! unfortunately my course has lots of water on it, plus rough that is excellent at hiding balls and very difficult to get out of! i'll check out those top flites you suggest hooj and give them a go.

I'm a bit of a ball snob and only use Pro V1 or V1x balls. My handicap has come down over the last couple of years and now on single figures. A decent ball really does make a difference.

For higher handicap players, it would still make a difference.

Pro V1x only, I miss the old Professionals & Tour Prestige still:(
Strata's or the Long and Soft Top Flites are really decent balls for the 'average' player & you can get good deals on them, £7.99 for 12 for instance, the new Nike ones are very reasonable too. I'd also suggest getting a load of lake/refurbished balls too if you plan on losing a few:)

agree with above poster - Prov1's all the way for me. Get them from ebay - about £16 a dozen for pearl one hit wonders etc.

Avoid refinsihed ones as they are rubbish.

Alternatively try the Srixon AD333 balls - they are a good cheaper alternative £15 a dozen or so new.

Pro Vs

If you're not prepared to spend as much as that I'd recommend either the Titleist NXT Tour or the Callaway HX Blue (which has a lovely soft feel to it)

lots of choice! i've just checked those Callaway HX Blue and im tempted. more perhaps than i had anticipated spending but i used Callaway warbirds a few years ago and got on with them quite well.

officially my handicap is 19 although my truer standard when it all comes together is round about 12. i've got a mix of titlest that i bought off someone who bought them off ebay, nxt, nxt tour and the like but most of them have been lost!

thanks for the advice all.

I use the Maxfli Revolution Tour, there not too expensive, you can get them for around £40 for 3 dozen failing this i use the Srixon AD333's a good combination of soft feel and length.

If i could i would use the Pro V1's all day long but for the price i can't really justify £30 for a dozen.

I am using the Maxfli Noodle, long & soft there £8 for a dozen, they are a cracking ball to use. great for those who are a moderate player :)

But if you are losing a few then I would buy some of those 50 lake ball specials, you get some half decent ones in there including Nike, and Top Flite

The best places to find cheap balls are car boot sales. I picked up a load of Srixon, Callaway, Nike and Titleist Pro V1's in decent nick for 10p each!

I still have most of them, and I think I only managed to lose one V1 so far \o/

I prefer ProV1x but they are very dear so if you're prone to wayward shots, can I recommend the Callaway HX Hot which are half the price and go miles!

I've tried the newer drivers (still use a Biggest Big Bertha) and they made no difference when using range balls. The biggest change in golf is not the huge drivers but the balls. These new balls are simply amazing. The HX Hots are probably a full club longer than the ProV1s althugh I still prefer the Titliests for Par 3s where accuracy is more important and feel really counts.

Pro V1. But NOT the V1x, it feels so hard in comparison.

And annoyingly I find that the Pro V1 will only last a few holes before it gets cut or badly scuffed, they're that soft. But so sweet when you hit it just right.

Srixon AD333's are a good ball for any handicap. If you visit the srixon website and register they'll send you a free one ;)

Pro v1 and V1x's are the best around and my favourites, but I am liking the top of the range srixons more and more.

I used NXT tours for a long time, when i'm playing bad i tend to use srixon AD333's though, the cheaper soft feel balls are very good too.

I do notice i lose between 20 and 40 yards with the srixons over the NXT tours though.

The pro v1 is an amazing ball, if you're adecent player, otherwise it can get expensive when you lose them.

Unless you have a quick swing speed, dont'even look at the prov1x.
