What's the deal with these? They seem to be stupidly expensive for a poverty spec golf. They come it at the same price on the used market as a 1.4TSi GT which has vastly superior spec.

Why would anyone buy one?

Bluemotion 08 plate 12.9k 8k miles
1896 cc
103 bhp
250 Nm

1.4TSi GT DSG 08 plate 12.9k 8k miles
1390 cc
138 bhp
220 Nm

Not thinking of buying one. A friend asked me to look for some Golfs on Autotrader as she's in the market for a new one and these bluemotion things popped up.

Because you get "cheap" road tax, forgetting the fact they have blown a wad of cash on a poverty spec golf.

Oooh, I see. Band B tax. That's a whole £125/year cheaper to tax.

And it make people forget it cost £2000 more, equating to 16yrs of difference in tax!

Because you can save on road tax and congestion charge!!111eleventyone.

Now, where are my hemp trousers and quorn nibblets?

ha ha ... guy at work is looking at cars now and the first thing he looks at is mpg and road tax cost.

When I asked him how much he was thinking of spending, he told me 12-14k:rolleyes:

I tried to point out that for the 6k miles he does annually its hardly worth worrying about fuel/tax costs, why not just spend less on the car?

ah well...

Oh dear. No wonder we're in a recession, with people like that who have the financial skills of a 5 year old.

Guy at work has just bought one, keeps banging on about the fact it costs £35 a year to tax and does 60mpg and about how much money he is saving compared to his Mondeo V6.

I like to do some maths to prove he is a complete retard, as he bought the car on finance it's going to take him nearly 20 years to recoup the costs of changing his car.

In short, avoid them like the plague

If he spent that money on a new car then wouldnt that stimulate the market more than if everyone bought used ones?:o

I was referring to the fact that he's spending £stupid to save a few quid and the obvious lack of knowledge as to how to save money.

Thats the thing tho.. he is far from stupid, managed to save the coin together to build his own house...

However on the issue of cars he seems positively retarded... I regularly take autocar in to put in lunch and if he's reading it he is in awe of cars that claim high mpg and low tax. 'ooooh.. 54.9 combined.. thats saving money from day one, rik, eh?'

'You mean after spending 16k on the thing, why not spend 6k and save the cash that way'?

madness on the part of some people, it really is, im running a diesel at the moment myself but would seriously consider a petrol when i change.

I'd imagine most of the purchases of these type of cars are made on PCP finance type deals.

So, if a family is budgeting say... £250 a month on a car, the bluemotion type car will probably have a higher residual value at the end of the term, meaning that even though you will get a better engined car for your £250, fuel may add up to an extra £40 a month, tax another £20, etc etc so your budget starts getting eaten away.

Not saying this is a correct or financially sound way of doing things, it's just the way I imagine a lot of family budgets are run!

It makes a good purchase as a company car. But agreed it is VW making a fast buck, look we have lowered it, banged on some seriouly hard narrow rubber and stuck it in a wind tunnel! Can we have another 2k please :D.

I can't argue with the fact I would like 54.9mpg. The m3 does 25mpg on distance 16-17mpg for fun and the van does 31-35mpg. I do 30,000 miles a year so that really would actually come close to saving me a fair bit (as a company car option).

Didn't they also change the gearing so that in-town driving was more fuel efficient?
