If you get an early example of the car, is it so old it's road tax exempt?

yes, i think it has to be over 25 years in age to be tax exempt. Anyone know for certain?

Unfortunatly it doesn't work like that anymore, and so the vehicle has to be '72 or pre-72 to qualify. They've kind of made this the deadline now, I believe (may be wrong, lol)! It may be later than 72, but im certain 76 is not tax exempt.

Your correct, I cant remember the exact year either, but I think its 73

Nah, they removed the rolling 25 year tax exempt status clause because it'd bankrupt them - the number of cars surviving after 1973 skyrockets, so they'd be out of pocket and have to make it up elsewhere.

I've owned a tax exempter mind, lovely feeling :p

My best mate was given an '82 Mk1 as his first car, a 1.1 litre in Pagas blue. It was solid but ugly.
Over the next 4 years he gradually fitted more and more GTI parts until eventually it was Mk1 GTI spec but with a 1.8 16v engine. Went well and gripped fantastically (though I always found the Mk1 steering a touch rubbery)
It wasn't fantastically reliable as a 1.1 though, it used to get a lot of starting/rough running problems due to the poor Pierburg carburettor.

Hosting company went up the swanny, so the above link is dead. Now here for those who want to see it :)

As mentioned, if your interested in learning the mechanical basics, Mk1's, Mini's and cars of that generation are great. Its just that, Mk1's are relatively expensive.

But if you want one, get one. :) FleaBay will become your second home :p

I say go for it. They are the sort of car you can take apart with a set of spanners and a couple of screwdrivers, and you get such a sense of acheivement when you replace/fix something yourself.

Well guys i'm getting pretty close to getting a car.

Mk1's are seemingly more scarce than when i first made this thread.

I'm definatly leaning towards the Mk2 now. How much more of a car do you get with the Mk2 over the Mk1?

Thanks

as soon as i live in a house with a garage or "some space" i plan on finidng a mk1 and going "mad" with it.

hopefully nothing will get in the way of that plan

i just really love the mk1 and mk2 golfs, especially the looks of them its hard to believe they're so old .
