I was looking to get a golf mk4 for first car and was wanting to know what does these mean like "S" model and "SE" ive noticed insurance is more expensive or cheaper on diffrent models so what diffrence is there too the car?

The Internet is really useful, they have things like search engines now:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Golf_Mark_IV

Hopefully you will feel like a bit of a fool for posting that, as that page tells you NOTHING about the different trim levels of the Mk4 Golf and what each of them gives you and is of limited help to the OP.

Basically, S is bottom of the range, SE is mid spec and adds things like air conditioning.

Different trim levels, I think there were E, S, SE, GT and GTI. E is basic, very basic (as in no central locking, electric windows or anything really) so avoid it. S is barely any better but adds central locking and electric front windows. SE or higher would be preferred but S would be passable as your first car.

thanks guys, the insurance quotes i get are pretty good for 1.4s and 1.6s,at the moment i am thinking about paying the extra on the insurance and go for 1.6.

Why do you want a MK4 Golf? Plenty of better cars for the money. The MK4 Golf is very poor value for what it is.

The Focus should be fine. Just sit in one, you'll be surprised how much room there is. The Focus is a better car in standard guise.

i am thinking either a focus or a golf, but i was wanting a golf because i like the look of them compared to a focus,The plus side for the focus is it looks like there is more room inside which i would need because at the moment i struggle getting in and out of my instructors 04 fiesta and i was the same in my other instructors c3 lol.I can never get my legs under steering wheel without going one leg in first and then bringing other leg in,and to get out its a nightmare.I am only 6 4" but i am on the larger side of life lol

Both cars are bigger than a Fiesta, but the Focus is a much better car for the money.

More to cars than looks, especially a first car

IMHO If you can't afford a 1.8T or R32 then don't bother, look at a Focus instead.

Pretty pointless advice for someone looking for a first car?

The Golf MK4s are decent enough cars, especially the PD diesels - well made and pretty reliable. The Focus is still better value for money though, although I'm guessing he should get an ST170 or RS?

No not really, if you read between the lines i'm saying its pointless buying a lower engined golf, so my advice is to buy a focus, didn't think i'd have to spell it out.

His point is that whilst a regular Focus is a good car in its own right, a regular Golf is not - only the high end models make any real sense, and as its his first car, will be out of reach, meaning it might be better to look elsewhere.

Fair enough - I read it as a suggestion to buy a 1.8T or R32..

Agreed that the Focus is a much better option, although I wouldnt describe the MK4 as a poor car, OK a 1.6 Golf will be pretty gutless but not much more so than a 1.6 Focus IMO. The 110 TDi would probably be within first car territory and isnt a bad engine really

What you loose in handling and cost of repairs, you gain in build quality. Each to thier own I though

Yes.

When looking for first cars I looked at a Golf and found it to be undeserving of it's "premium" price tag and elevated status above the Focus.

The Golf has common faults, as does the Focus but some people instantly say Volkswagen are bullet-proof and Fords are shoddy when that's not true.
