Hey all,

Had my first taste of golf last weekend and actually quite enjoyed it. Going to start playing most weekends and I have decided to buy myself a set. As I am a complete beginner, I'm looking for a nice starter set. I'm also left handed so I need a left handed set.

Can anyone recommend me something to start off with.

I've seen these which seem nice and cheap, but not sure what they would be like.

Thanks.

They'll be terrible.

Go to your local driving range and try as many as poss, then get the ones you like correctly fitted with the right shafts, lie angle etc

If you are serious about playing regularly, then I'd suggest maybe spending a touch more.
Try http://www.direct-golf.co.uk/ as well for some cheap stuff.
I started off with a set of Wilson irons and then moved on to some Taylor Made RAC irons, which I had custom fitted.

Most of the new sets of irons from the bigger manufacturers are more beginner friendly.
A mate of mine starting playing a couple of months ago with some old Gary Player clubs. He needed to hit the ball perfect to get it away.
He has just bought a new set of Mizuno's and even off-centre hits go a lot further than his decent hits with the old set.

nip along to somewhere that has a launch monitor, or, even better a local golf pro. They will be able to advise you better about clubs etc.

go to American Golf or the pro shop as the above poster said. try them all out and get the ones you like, but set yourself a sensible budget. when i bought mine (some years ago now) I tried all sorts of clubs in all sorts of price ranges until I found the ones that really felt right.

Re fitting, unless you're a pro or abnormally short or tall, you don't really need them fitted (as I was told in a golf shop), they make clubs for us normal folk :p the most important thing is that they feel "right".

Why would a complete beginner need to get fitted for clubs? You need to have an extremely consistent swing for clubs fitted to you to give you any benefit. Most golfers have never made two identical swings in their life so which swing are you fitting the clubs to exactly?

I don't really want to go above £200 for a full set. I've played with my mates Wilson ones and they seemed fine, so I don't think I would need them fitting.

Why would they not get them fitted??? its FREE when you're buying a new set of clubs. What better time to stop bad habits devloping due to a lie angle that is 2 degrees out?

"Problem" with second hands is that the chances are they'll be fitted for someone else. Rather than just not fitted.

However, my dad bought a set of 2nd hand Ping G10s and I don't think they were fitted to him, but they seemed ok, and they've given him a massive improvement in accuracy and consistency.

I have his £70 dunlop piles o' crap now, which were reduced from supposedly £200. I only use the irons from the set, and his ping clubs are much nicer, even for me.

When I find a similar set of 2nd hand irons I'll be buying those, even if they don't fit me exactly. Can't afford new.

I'm going to a local direct golf shop in the next few days to have a chat and see if i can get fitted for some clubs.

I've been playing with second hand clubs for about 3 months and because im quite tall i need a fitted set.

Pointless getting fitted if you've just started, as your swing will likely change on a daily basis, unless of course you're very tall like Andr3w or a midget.

Once you know you've got the golfing bug for sure, and you have a fairly repeatable swing, then it's time to buy a decent set of forged irons and get properly fitted.

Anyway back to the case in hand of trying to find the op a half decent set of golf clubs.

I've had a quick scout around in my golf favourite websites and come up with these 4, all of which should be considerably better quality than the "Texan POWER 2 SQUARE Golf Set"

If I had to pick out 1 of these sets for a beginner, I think I would probably go for the RAM set from Scottsdale, reasonable price and I've had stuff from them before, so they're kosher.
