saw a golf in my town today for sale for 2k cant remember the reg i think its a mk3 and the reg was R .

what do you lot think of VR6 Golfs with 100k miles on it?

Thanks

Amazing, being a VW they can go on forever. ;)

Ask to test drive it. At the end of the day we all like different things in our car.

lol ouch! will go for a test drive tomorrow see what its like

atm i have a Civic 1.6 Vtec so not sure what 2 do wanna change bored of my car now ;)

if its in good condition (im guessing the high milage might not be the only issue at that price) then snap the blokes hand off!

think its worth the hassle swapping from a civic 1.6 vtec vti to a car that is about the same power? tho saying that my civic is on 97k now

if its in good condition then yes
a few mods will see 200bhp on an amazing sounding engine :]

The VR6 is a 2.8 narrow angle V6. They are great cars but not quite as fast as you'd expect from the size of the engine. From memory they were only 175bhp as standard although the earlier ones can be tuned well. I had a late model R-reg black "Highline" (until some scrote stole it :(). Two things to note:

1) The later model VR6's had a different engine management system to the earlier models and it was less tunable.

2) The spark plugs on the later model V6's are very expensive. I recall being quoted £20 each from a VW dealer (obviously cheaper from a non-VAG dealer but still a lot more than the standard plugs). Luckily some scrote stole it before I bothered to change them :)

At 100k it's going to need a new cam chain; provided it's been well serviced and everything works you're OK other than that.

Surely the whole point in a chain over a belt is that it doesn't need replacement?

there are 2 variations....2.8, or 2.9 - which was found in the corrado.

...And the Vento VR6...vastly underrated car.

Fox - a chain needs replacing...just not as often.

I had a Jetta VR6 with 260 000 km on the clock when i was in canada and it was still going strong + it had been tuned to 200 bhp.

Exactly, so 100k miles is pretty pittiful - thats the interval for the cambelt on my car :/

Thats what I thought as well - chains are usually good for quite a bit more than that, unless the VR6 is an exception. Perhaps a tensioner needs replacement (if chain driven engines even have those?!)

100k is the guided replacement date. 176k with not even a rattle on mine :)
friend was telling me about an issue bsm were having with a few of there new Corsa and Astras, after a few 1000 miles the cam belt would snap if the car was stalled one to may times. quite ironic really as there scheduled replacement date for there belts are 80k lol
I just dont believe some of the outlandish claims for life expectancy of cam belts on modern cars, many seem to fail way before the "scheduled replacement"
