Exactly, so 100k miles is pretty pittiful - thats the interval for the cambelt on my car :/

And you'd realisticly trust that would you? ;) Brave man...

Maybe the time period is longer though.
100k is good for a belt, didnt know any lasted that long. 60k or 80 is usual.

I think the Porsche chain on the Boxter engine is 120k, so thats a fair advantage although it wont be cheap :D

I had a Jetta VR6 with 260 000 km on the clock when i was in canada and it was still going strong + it had been tuned to 200 bhp.

What tuning gets it to 200bhp?, just interested :)

My head memorys not the best so correct me if i am wrong but didn't i see a test between two VR6's on Top Gear many moons ago.
One had 40k on it the other had 140k on it.
The 140k motor beat the 40k motor of the line and Top end.
The owner of the 140k car said he thought the car got better every 10k he put on it.
Sounds to me that if you got a 100k car with FSH minimal owner etc it would be a great car and just about starting to loosen up.
I personally have had many Golfs but Mk2 GTi's are my love as i am old and they mean other things to me from my era. Mates have had VR6's nearing the 100k mark and i can report No scarey stories.
Definetly down to the individual car and how the previous owners have looked after it.

I'd go with safety over what the book says any day of the week. Rare or otherwise why risk totally knackering your engine especially if it's a pride and joy motor? Preventative maintence often saves you a LOT of cash.

Surely Ford would be held liable if their cambelts failed before the book says to change them?

Unlikely, the cam belt on the GTi6 engine states a 72k change. They've been known to snap as low as 35k! (Usually around 50k). Changed mine at 40k along with tensioners, rollers, waterpump etc. Much rather shell out £300 now than completely knacker the engine and get a £1300 bill :)

Pug won't shell out for the snappers or admit that there's a problem.

As said 100k should be fine so long as it's been looked after well :)

100k for a belt! I would not trust that, all depends how the car has been driven if you accelerate quick it puts more stress on the belt safe figure is to half the manufacturers recommendation.

A chain will need replacing since the followers will start to wear and the chain will start to slap as it gets older.

I would not bother getting a VR6 never driven one myself but I hear they are very expensive to run both fuel and maintenance wise + they aint even that quick.

Not after the warantee's run out they won't ;)

All cambelt mileages should be taken with a large pinch of salt, regardless of manufacturer. It's really not worth bending your valves over...

My brother just bought a GTi-6. He called the place where it used to be serviced and they said it had a new engine at 47k because it went "bang" they wouldnt/couldnt say why.
So its now on 55k on this engine (car is on 102k) so I reckon he needs to get it done :)

I just looked at an M Reg VR6 with 60k+ miles on it, the description says bla bla bla vgc and needs tlc hence the price of £2000

what does that mean because I think that's a good price.

It means the wheel arches are falling off, the seats are ripped and the paintwork is dented, scraped and rusted. Probably. But mechanically sound, perhaps...

who knows what it means, go take a look and a drive
personally i think your looking at the wrong cars at £2k. double that to get a decent version
