With the 2 year point on BMW residuals, don't forget that residuals are always stronger with current model BMWs at that age. Poncy new BMW owners don't want to be seen in previous gen and desert them droves when the new model comes out which obviously hits residuals. I don't think the effect is as marked with the Golf which retains strong residuals and image across the generations as you don't have the same snooty buyer base. I suspect long term Golf residuals (say at the 3,5,7,9 year mark) will, comparatively, be similar or possibly stronger that the 1 series. The 1 series is also ugly, so once that 'current gen' novelty wears off it could easily go the way of the Z3 in terms of residuals....

I got a style for £12800 from Broadspeed I think it was.

I swear you used to be able get a Focus for £9995 for a base model.

Same for the Golf. It had wind up windows and no spec whatsoever, but it was possible. When Mum was looking about six months ago, list was £14500 for a 1.4S with an earth shaking 80bhp.

I remember a ford salesman talking about a diesel ford. He said if you want reliabilty go to vw. Thats what he thought of his own product.

VW own Ford.

I heard that you don't need to service VWs, they just keep going and going and going lololol. Don't ask me about the gearbox in my 1.6 MK4 Golf though lolol.

I've not been too unlucky with my Golf yet but jesus christ the amount of well publicised niggles and faults is mental. This German cars are so amazingly WIN is fail tbh. :D

Not sure I'll have another dub again lol.

But, I wouldn't say modern Fords are better. They're just not worse.

The amount of 'help my MK4 Golf is broken' threads is silly :p Focuses are not the world's most reliable cars, but you'd be a fool to think buying a VW = 100% reliability.

They're two generations old and between 7 and 12 years old. Of course stuff is going to break or need replacing.

We talking service stuff, or stuff that shouldn't really break?

You've proved my point in a way, both cars are old and require parts replenishment. VW OWNZZZ FORD LOLOL is just a retarded comment.

Either.

Get off the gearbox high horse. It affected about 18 months worth of cars then they fixed it.

Focus Mk1 had it's faults too - horrendously expensive instrument clusters anyone?

Never thought I'd ever ever ever ever ever say this, but the man speaketh sense :D

I had a focus and 'upgraded' to a golf. Pretty much everything about it feels much more solid, I also prefer sitting a bit lower down.

The only thing I've noticed is the steering on the focus was quite a bit lighter, but I've got used to that now.

In tongue in cheek

Golfs are for boring people, it has a dreadful interior, they break down every few k, average engines, weigh in at 100 tonnes and are still boring to drive, as well as living in the past of the Mk1 GTi

Focus has better handling, heated front screen, slightly better interior, far more reliable, cheaper to run, but has that sheep mentality about it, as every man and his dog has one.

For me Im a sheep
