Gone mad

Yea, 160hp and 210 ft.lb (285 Nm) on 10.5:1, nice high comp engines with no smog gear. 0-60 in something like 10.5-11.5 seconds, so not too shabby.

P5B weighs about 1600kg I think :)

I still have the BMW, of course. That's the fleet stalwart for the duration and won't be going anytime soon - but this is just something to fiddle with, see what's what and go from there. Start doing something with my time :)

Fantastic looking cars, my dad used to have one until it lost in a fight with a lamp post (it was a close fight though :) ).
That thing is 2 years younger than me :) and I'm still running fine with very little care as well :)

Well today I went and stood at the top of the drive, waiting in anticipation for it to arrive. I have to say I hadn't really clocked the colour when I'd been looking at it previously, I thought it was a lot greyer but it certainly is admiralty blue in the harsh light of day!

We shunted it off the transporter and he left me to my own devices. Firstly, I just sat there, confused by the rather radically laid out controls. Knobs, buttons, sliders and dials everywhere. The handbrake's an umbrella under the steering wheel on the right hand side, there's no steering lock and the ignition key goes in a tiny little barrel to the right of the rev counter.

Remarkably, with a little choke (and after faffing around with the keys for a few minutes, the barrel's loose so it's a case of rotating it and then some) it fired right up and sat there whispering away. I had only a short drive to get to grips with it, just to our hardstanding - during which there were no odd groans, creaks or crashing but it does pull a little under braking, which is understandable really due to it's long time standing.

The power steering is almost fingerlight which is remarkable, you really do waft along and everyone remarked at how prestigous it looked cruising down the road. You wonder what happened to Rover, really, going from making cars like this to today. It really is quite something, the way it's put together, designed, built and detailed.

Unfortunately I didn't get any 'before' shots, I set straight about washing it as it arrived late today (5) and I just wanted to get the worst of the grime off it - so it's a bit streaky and blotchy as it was drying whilst photographed. The silver roof came up a treat, as did all the trim (which is stainless hence practically unmarked and very bright).

Tomorrow I will T-cut, wax and polish the paint in order to give it a little protection and life, as well as treating and priming any exposed rust spots on the surface in order to preserve the outer panels. I will also set about cleaning the interior (as it's scummy for the most part) and doing some minor fettling.

I did have an MOT booked in for tomorrow but as the car arrived so late I didn't get the chance to check the fluid levels, line conditions, lights and simple things so I cancelled it. I'll spend a few days instead going through it and then rebook, as it's fairly quiet down the garage anyway at the moment.

Anyway, voila - apologies for the random, relatively poor quality shots - it was getting dark and I've been charging about all day:

Some of the surface damage:

This stuff was ingrained all over the place on the silver roof:

Roof getting cleaned up a bit, I'll T-cut and polish tomorrow to get more dirt out:

Few poor shots of the interior - it is quite mucky but I reckon it'll clean up a treat and the seats are actually in really quite fine condition, they just need a real deep clean, some treatment and a little stitching here and there. The back is virtually unmarked:

(Rear opening quarterlights? Yes SIR!)

Initial assessment? I think it's a go-er.....

More tomorrow :)

Absolutely fantastic, what a unique choice - love it.

The M reg one wouldn't be allowed black/silver plates btw. ;)

Get it all cleaned up and it will be real nice. :D I wonder how well you can repair that front leather, seems to be the only thing to let down the interior.

Why oh why didn't rover continue building cars of this quality and instead choose to concentrate on the complete and utter junk we saw through the late 80's and 90's?

That car looks to be of fantastic quality.

No wonder they went bust :(

Get some proper tyres on it, those skinny Cross-Ply's, a V8 and roundabouts really don't bear thinking about, might as well put furniture casters on it. :D

Rover's demise was more to do with management issues rather than the actual cars though... Well the 75 wasn't bad. :p

I test drove a 'wedge' 420GSi Executive (similar to your pic) and it drove beautifully. No wind noise, no knocks, no squeaks, nothing. Even at NSL speeds.

I liked it so much I'm picking it up on Friday. But that's only because it's top spec and uncommon compared to normal Rover's of that era. I also got it for beer money.

The P5B looks lovely. :)

No wonder they went bust :([/QUOTE]

That's British Leyland/Rover Group for you. Crap cars and bumbling executives ruined more or less every company in the whole group. One of the most ridiculous things that they did was with the MG, when California (where quite a few export model MGs went) changed the safety rules, it was deemed that the MGB's headlights were too low down, so instead of redesigning the front end guess what they did? That's right they raised the suspension by over an inch to make the headlights comply with Cali regulations.

Looks like it needs a good machine polish, paint looks super flat on the wings and doors, hopefully it will come back up!

However its a fantastic looking car, rear seats look like they've never been sat in!

To be fair, Ford/Vx/Citreon/Pugeot etc where no better at that time?

I'm sure, as mentioned, it was about management and the late 90's non-development of cars..

[edit]Actually, I think you are saying that they went from top quality premium build to hum-drum tat in the 80s/90s?

I had Honda's version of the boxy 200 (or was it the 400?)
The Honda Concerto, even had the proper Honda engine and not a rebadged HGF machine! Loved that car, but i suppose thats cause it was my 1st.

200 and 400 shared the same floorpan and most body panels as the Concerto, yeah.

Only the K series spit out HG's on a monthly basis. The T series engines were regarded as bullet proof. ;)
