good 1.5 tb HDD

Its really meant for storage rather than operating systems as its a 5400RPM (I THInk - need to confirm that) and is more economical. Still a very good drive though but not my choice to install the OS onto.

I suspect as it is "Green" it will turn off when idle quicker than normal hard drives. This might be a pain if you have your Operating System on it, but then again, the OS will probably keep it from going idle long enough. Unless you are benchmarking or really after performance I suspect it will be sufficient.

i have 5 of these in my home server and they are great get sustained write of about 90MB/s which is great. The Writes max my gigabit network so i cant complain there

they do not turn themselves off at all

What's the long term reliability like on these drives?

What about the sound levels too?

Got one for my htpc, its an OS drive and storage, quietest of the big drives, I never can hear it whilst under the tv, the 2TB are meant to be louder. Reliability is the same with all drives - you take your pick and see.
So many users pick samsung and i've had problems with them and yet WD have not let me down (yet).
