So, I've got an HIS 6950 2Gb card unlocked to a 6970, and the stock cooler is a little on the loud side, and when under serious stress can hit 99C. So, what options are there available for third party coolers for it? I don't know much about GPU coolers, but I figure they can't be much harder than CPU heatsinks to install, just line the holes up? Except there also have to be heat pads for the memory? But that's just a case of lining it all up as well?

The Shayman doesn't cool the VRAM's IIRC.
Have you thought about liquid cooling at all?
Here are some pics of the 6970 stripped - they're taken from the HAF X link in my sig

the greay is all the thermal pads you have to put on

And the waterblock:

I think Arctic cooling also have a cooler for it

I'm not sure about that. It's the VRAM I worry about if it's flashed as it will be running above stock voltages.

Edit: by 'that', I mean the Shaman.

I'm not too keen on water cooling since you'd generally want to do the whole rig with that, which is a little out of my budget right now, plus my current CPU cooler is doing a fantastic job.

I do like that thermalright shaman as it fits in pretty well with my CPU heatsink (the rather massive Thermalright IFX-14, and there are 2 spare slots below my GPU at the moment, so could fit it if it would give the best performance. The one problem with that is that it looks rather complicated getting the fan to change speeds as the GPU heats up.

Looking at those two arctic coolers, I can only see two differences, the II version has the memory heatsinks and the fans are PWM controlled, so would get faster as it got hotter? While the original lacks these two things?

Yes. I would certainly go for the arctic cooling as it ha some great reviews and is supposed to be silent.

I would add that my reference 6950 with unlocked shaders doesn't top 75 degrees. I don't know what case and case cooling you have, but it may be simpler to concentrate on that.

It doesn't normally hit that high temperatures, only when I really thrash it, but even when idle I think its the loudest thing in my case. Its the Antec DF-85, so packed full of fans as it is :D

The Shaman takes up 4 slots(3 slots below), there is also a possible loss of the slot above the card due to the large mounting screws, whereas the AC Extreme takes 3(2 slots below).

My 6950>70 Accelero Extreme 5870 coolers, more or less the same cooler as the Accelero XTREME/Plus II.

Temps are in there too.

I'm also looking for a new cooler for the gpu as it's a bit loud at the moment. The Accelero does come out as one of the best but it seems to be a bit of a hassle trying to order them.

Yeah, I've found it for about £70 inc shipping from a german website, but absolutely nothing over here, which is extremely strange.

So, that leaves the Shaman, which Overclockers do seem to have, but it doesn't mention 6950 compatability? That said, the review mentions using it in a 6950 so I guess the board is similar enough to the older ATI cards that it can be used. Which leaves the only question being how to cool the VRM.

^ How some of you guys don't know how to search on google yet is baffling!;)
It took me less than 2 minures to find 68 Xtreme Plus GPU Coolers at £40.
You would need to find some heatsinks as they don't stock them though or get them straight from AC.
