If thats the case I'd loose the speakers aswell, you'll probably get a much nicer sound from an integrated stereo with some better matched speakers.

I would like to be able to play MP3's via my hifi, so I am looking to buy an mp3 player and connect it to my amp.
looking at ipod nano, whats the best way to connect it to my amp? 3.5mm to phone lead or are the docks able to do this.
should I considered looking at other mp3 players.

Do you have a computer that's on 24/7? If so you could just use a media streamer. That way you can control with IR remote, and see what you're doing (VFD)
A DAP is ok leaving in random mode (I have one) but lack of music storage, no multi-room, no remote control makes it far less usable than Squeezebox/Roku etc.
