Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Yours is broken then, mine is silent.

Perhaps your ears are broken? They certainly are not silent. :P

Really? as I can not hear my microserver at all, and when a MBP gets going its fans are way louder than the microserver

Kimbie

How often do you hear a MBP fan go?

Multiple flash videos or gaming is about the only real time mine ramps up. 99% of the time, it is as good as silent - certainly much quieter than the microserver.

I'm not knocking the microserver, but it just isn't quiet enough for me to have in a living space.

Can you guys just clarify what gfx cards and USB card is good for the microserver. Since moving house the server is no longer in my room but downstairs near the tv so might as well make use of Xbmc etc.

(saves reading through all 99 pages)

I have a LP ATI HD6450 and a £10 USB sound card from another "e" retailer that I got a while back.

Might also be a good idea to pop some more ram in too while its cheap.

Having some issues and wondering if anyone can help:

Ive got the hp microserver with windows 7 pro installed connected to a switch which connects to an acer revo 3700 (XBMC) and my main pc (win 7 unltimate). Transfers from main pc to hp server is 60mb or so so very fast and happy (using gigabit switch) now ive got twonky media server installed on the server and can play all my stuff on my revo with XBMC and works flawlessly but obv no media info comes up on the xbmc (i hear twonky uses upnp so 1080p plays fine) just file names. Now ive set up SMB sharing on the server with all 4 hard drives on the hp server. The problem is when i select 1080p content it plays then buffering all the time. is there anythink else i can try, to me i think the network to the acer revo doesnt seem to be delivering data fast enought but its connected via gigabit speeds and its wired. help please!

Have you made sure that each of the network adapters is set to auto-negotiate and is definately at Gigabit?

It's 1gb from the hp server to the switch which is 1gb back to my main pc but 100mbs from the switch to my dlink 615 virgin router which is where the acer revo in my living room is connected. I may just remove the 615 switch and connect direct to the superhub as that's gigabit speed if I remember correctly.

Il try this tonight with the superhub and see if that improves it. If it goes looks like il need a decent gbit router.

The bottleneck will be your 615 as that is only 100mb no matter what you set your networkd cards to it will only connect at the speed of the switch the device is connected to.

I now have 11TB in my N40L running WHS2011:-

1 x 2TB
3 x 3TB

I think that's probably enough, don't think I'll need any more storage for a while ;)

Yeah il try the superhub tonight, obv I'm thinking 100mbs would be fast enought for 1080p content? Is that not the case?

I'm not sure why you would need a USB sound card with an ATI card.

The audio goes over the HDMI.

Ah cool.
So I can just bang that 6450 in and all will be good for my tv across hdmi with sound? will just watch the occasional film to be honest through tv speakers.

Any particular makes to watch out for that won't fit ? Or just a low profile 6450..... Or something different. Gonna order tonight.

SuperHub is definately 1GigE

100Mb is definately enough for 1080P video

Just connected the superhub up and getting smooth playback now, seems 100mbs is not fast enought which is annoying, its running gigabit cable from the switch to the 615 but obv at 100mbs speeds. now ive got the superhub on all light on my netgear are green indicating 1gbs speeds and xbmc is working great. i may have to invest the the asus premium router, for the now lets see the supehub goes:)

I think your main problem (if anything) with the superhub will be the wireless if you use it for that.

Weird about your hd streaming problem. On my PS3 you can press something which shows you the bitrate of the bluray, i've never seen it go much above 30Mbps so assume 100Mbps would be plenty. Unless something else strange is going on, like your previous device (615 is it?) didn't have the port speed settings set right or something?
