Thanks Essexraptor

Ordered last night :)

After cashback will work out at £124, cant quibble at that.
Got 2008r2 and the new server 8 ready for install, will install and setup both then create a OS image. Can then switch with ease if needed :)

So now need a 5450/6450 or similar that does Audio for a reasonable price :)

Rumour has it (over at HUKD) the cashback offer is being extended into april adn the new form will be able to be emailed :)

From what I've read you can email the existing thread, please look at EssexRaptors response for a recent example.

Mine turned up today :D going to set it up later on. Gotta pick it up from work as wasn't sure on delivery time but turns out it was delivered just after 9 this morning !

Currently making space for it to live.

Plan so far is Exsi 5 with WHS 2011, Will most likely install other things over the next few weeks not entirely sure what tho currently xD

I have mine running at the moment using WHS 2011.

I have 2 Samsung F4s in it along with the 160GB drive it came with as the OS drive.

I have a lot of data on it at the moment. One F4 is full and the other is half full. I don't have any redundancy at the moment.

I am thinking of moving away from WHS to Freenas with ZFS. Can I build a redundant array on the fly? (Without losing the data on the drives I have)

How many more drives would I need to add to do this? Can I add other 2GB drives or should I stick with F4s?

Also I keep seeing people mentioned Exsi 5. In a nutshell why are people installing this?

Cause it means I won't be tied down to one OS. I can install multiple OSes at the same time. For example I have a Windows 2008 R2 DC which manages my two lab Exchange 2010 servers. I also have an Arch Linux server that I use for mumble/murmur and more importantly to proxy my internet traffic from work so I can get on sites my company doesn't want me on :p

Take a look at Drive Bender and Stablebit DrivePool before you rush off to FreeNAS and ZFS

I'm actually coming from FreeNAS 7 to WHS :)

ZFS is only now getting stable with FreeNAS 8 and it's CPU hungry as well as RAM hungry. I'm not sure what performance you'll get, file transfer wise, with the N40L. FeeNAS 7 was good with software RAID 5 but not flexible enough for me RE increasing storage size.

The guys running ESXi are more into virtualisation than running dedicated large storage devices and you'll note that a lot of them are running small scale lab set-ups and multi use boxes :)

So in a nutshell it's virtulisation software

EDIT

ZFS requires 3 x dives to create a pool... it's formatted at setup stage so any data on your drives will be lost AFAIK

Emailed the guys offering the cashback, extended til end of April :)
Already installed me RAM, forgot the GFX card lol.

I was hoping the cabling to install an optical was already there, apears to have a molex power for it and no data cable, is this right or is it curled up somewhere inside?

Also anyone got a 6570 in theirs? Seems to be the best gfx card that will fit.
Wondering about power side of things

Got mine yesterday. Taking the board out and putting new ram in was easy... how the hell do you put the graphics card in? I've unscrewed the screws holding in the blanking panels for the pci, but can't figure out how to get them out as they seemed clamped in by the black plate above?

Got a feeling this is a homer moment, but still frustrating!

Cheers

Looks like both might do what I want.

I simply use the box as a sophisticated NAS. I have all my media on the server and I use it for running torrents as well.

Both of Drivebender and DrivePool talk about duplication. What I want to achieve is some sort of redundancy. If a hard drive in the pool fails I don't want to lose any data. Will they offer that?

I have a load of media including Blu-Ray rips that I don't want to have to go through the process of ripping again in bulk. With the amount of media I have I just want something that I don't need to backup - as backing up will be too expensive.

Anything vital I have backed up this is just my media collection that I want to be reasonably safe (home pictures, movies etc I have backed up in multiple locations)

I'm in the middle of changing over at the mo. Backing up all my data off the server. Being away from home means I have to do all this in fits and starts.

The duplication is your redundacy protection - however I would still look at a off site backup as well. I grabbed the Cloudberry addin (it's on a special low offer till the end of this week) and I'm linking it to a cloud back up solution like Amazon S3 just to make Syncing backup data easier.

Hope that helps

:)

EDIT

from memory the Drivepool option has a scanner option as well to keep an eye on your drive states = it's also the cheaper of the 2 - dosh wise

Will the duplication retain all data in the case of a drive failure?

With regards Cloud Backup - it isn't really feasible for multiple terabytes of data. Certainly not for home use.

It pulls over like a clamping plate

this guy is a nutcase... but at approx the 11 min mark youll see him fiddle with that bracket

E-mailed you, but in essence, molex>sata power cable needs to be bought separately and a quick google shows that GPU draws more than the power the PCIE can provide.

Just think of it as a hybrid RAID 5 array.

If you have that much media stored,,,, you really should look at a off system back up solution James. It will be painful, initially, exporting TB's of data out but pure folly to intrust it to a NAS/RAID solution only mate :)
