Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

hi all i took the plunge and bought one of these, waiting on delivery now :)

Just a quick Q about ram and os

all i want to run is a media sharing box, would i benefit at all upgrading ram also which os for sharing files would ppl recommend?

thanks!

As good and informative that this mammoth thread is, having trawled through it (unless I've missed something) I can't find anything that helps me situation.

I have a 40L running WHS 2011 with 8GB RAM and a 5450.

I want to be able to stream my 1080P blu-ray rips to playback on the PS3, including subtitles across a gigabit network.

I've been trying to use PS3 media centre, but playback is very choppy and maxes out the CPU (understandably).

I've used the standard MEncoder and also Avisynth/Mencoder, but I can't for the life of me get it to use hardware acceleration on the GPU (using GPU-Z to monitor the card).

I did look at converting the mkvs with mkv2vob, but this is very hit and mostly miss to get a successful conversion on genuine blu-ray mkvs.

I can stream from a decent desktop PC to the PS3 fine.

What are you guys doing to get this working?

Just use the microserver as a HTPC box, install XBMC and you are sorted.

I tried to do exactly what you are doing, in the end I just used the microserver, not had a single issue with anything.

Is the n40l not capable of running ps3 media server to translate mkv on the fly etc?, thats the main reason i was going to buy one

The processor in the N40L may be an issue. However if you are prepared to wait there is a new microserver on the horizon according to an HP Product manager I spoke to at a recent IT conference. He wouldn't tell me anything about it though but said it was a decent 'step up' from the current model.

Then he waxed lyrical about what he was really there for which is to evangelise the gen 8 Proliant server range (which incidently look really impressive)

no idea, basically what i want is to use my usenet account to downloads lots of stuff, which are mostly in mkv format, i then want to be easily able to stream them to ps3, xbox etc without having to do conversions etc, simply by streaming them via a media server thingy on the microserver

So can the h40l do that?

a) without graphic card
b) with cheapo graphic card

i can understand that for output to a tv, but this will be a header less server outputting to my network, if i did need a card anyone got a reccomEndation( SIlent if poss).

THANKS

anyone?

looking to run a media server just storage of 2x2tb with adding some more later

should i update ram and which os do u guys think is best?

also which setup for hdds?

I'd probably put the drives in RAID1 (Mirroring) to keep your data safe and then put Ubuntu on. Easy and free, and will work fine on 2GB.

My personal setup is a bit more complicated, I upgraded to 8GB and turned the microserver into a virtual host by running ESXi from a memory stick (using the internal socket) This eases remote management quite a bit, the microserver can be tucked away without a monitor or keyboard and I can install and manage multiple virtual machines remotely. I've got a Linux VM serving up my storage and a windows server VM on domain controller duties.
