Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Does anyone anyone know if 2Gb 2Rx8 PC3-10600R-9-10-B0 memory is any good? We have a bunch of 2Gb sticks left over from our blade upgrades.

The one that comes with the server is 1Gb 1Rx8 PC3-10600E-9-10-D0, I know I could just try it but bit limited for time at the moment at work :(

Kimbie

That memory appears to be registered (as you'd expect in a server blade) so it won't work.

Thought you needed EEC memory? Or is there EEC Registered as well?

Kimbie

The Microserver needs Unbuffered memory. It doesn't need to be ECC, but can be. There may be issues mixing ECC and non-ECC memory.

Servers using server chipsets usually use Registered memory. I've never seen Registered memory that wasn't also ECC.

Smaller servers based on desktop or mobile chipsets will normally use Unbuffered memory. Unbuffered memory is available with or without ECC.

My Microserver is running 8GB of bog standard DDR3 Unbuffered non-ECC memory from Crucial.

Fair enough, I will have a word with my supplier see what sort of price he can do me

Well got Ubuntu installed onto the 160Gb disk mounted in the top bay, just needs my other disks now

Thanks

Guys, I'm back on WHS now, I've got 4 HDDs in the SATA bays, and mounted the supplied drive to the 5.25 bay connected to the ODD sata port. Now AHCI works but I get faster speeds in IDE mode! Not sure what is causing slower speeds using AHCI, I know the ODD port is running some IDE mode, is there a PCI card that I can use so it also becomes a SATA port? I know I need a 2 port sata internal card but which one is good?

Thanks.

While browsing my usual sites, I came across a guide how to set Linux to send out email alerts, and also how to configure mdadm to set out email alerts if there is a problem with the array.

Stage 1 - Installing Email alerts

http://sysadmingeek.com/articles/how-to-setup-email-alerts-on-linux-using-gmail/

Stage 2 - Setting up RAID alerts

http://sysadmingeek.com/articles/how-to-setup-software-raid-for-a-simple-file-server-on-ubuntu/

I have done most of this myself, until I get the disks I cant test the raid part, but I hope some find it useful

What's all this talk about fake RAID and only working in Windows? I can setup Mirrors and striping in the RAID config util during boot up after setting the IDE/SATA mode to RAID in the BIOS. Once in windows just used disk manager to format the drive, Vail installed without a problem even though the install drive is RAID1.

As I understand it, fakeraid only has Windows drivers not *nix ones

I have a small issue (probably something I've done), can't seem to fix it!

Got 2 x 2TB drives, created a single RAID 0 using both drives, maximum size.

Installing Server 2008 R2, it splits the partition up, one is a little more than 2TB and the other 1.6TB however when it starts to install it returns an error that installation can't move onto the next stage?

Not sure what to do!

Thanks

Thanks, so should I create two RAID 0 of 2TB each or partition during Windows install, a smaller OS partition as the primary and the rest can be split accordingly.

Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't install the OS onto a RAID0 partition, especially if your using software RAID. Better to move the 160GB drive up to the optical bay, connect it to the extra SATA header and use that. Then format the data drives using the software RAID in Windows - it's has higher throughput and uses less CPU than the on-board fakeRAID. Use a GPT partition to get past 2TB barrier with the data array (2TB is the limit for MBR volumes).

Thanks very much Berwhale,

I created two RAID 0 partitions and initialised the second in Windows (just testing).

I'll mount the 160GB at the top, does that mean I boot using AHCI and ignore RAID completely, I'll delete the current config and set up the stripe in Windows.

Thanks again and apologies for the questions, last time I setup a RAID config was when Quantum made hard drives!

I am interested in buying one of these for a home NAS. What sort of through put speeds are you lot seeing using Windows 2008? 75MB/Sec + ?

Thanks
