Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Had a strange thing happen earlier

Have a HP micro server NL40 using onboard sata raid controller and amd raid xpert which syncs on a nightly basis

Anyhow

Went to pop a USB external drive in to the microserver, detects it, jobs a gooden

Reboot the server, didn't want to have anything to do with it, kept going through post, seeing the raid functional then another screen saying no active partition. Can only assume its the external drive that caused it. Checked bios settings but I am very very ichy when it comes to screwing around with HP microserver and raid

Just modify the boot order in the BIOS. Sounds like it's trying to use the USB as boot device.

It's still there, the N54L is £209 minus £100 cashback, google "N54L £209" and follow the first result.

Yes, back up on pre order now.

I'm really struggling to find a reason NOT to buy one now! I'm looking for some kind of backup / NAS / fileserver / webserver device and for the money it'd be rude not to go for one of these.

They're so good I'm trying to find a reason to justify buying the Gen8 when it comes out. There's nothing actually wrong with mine :)

Just ordered a N54L to replace my Synology NAS which is getting a bit long in the tooth now. That, and I needed more bays than I currently have. The £100 cashback will be nice too.

The only downside is that I won't be getting it from the place that's selling it the cheapest as I closed my account with them after some ******* awful customer service problems. Still, it's a bargain either way.

Bear in mind, the last time the microserver was available for near ~£200 before cashback, it was because retailers were selling versions bought cheaply from europe that weren't eligible for the cashback.
One of my friends got hit by this.
So double check the model numbers before buying, against the model numbers eligible for the cashback.

The model numbers matched regardless. So far US, EU and Uk models have all had the same SKU.

It was where they sourced it from that mattered.

You would have thought HP woulda been able to confirm this with serial numbers but every time I've heard it been refused it been on the low price (£165 if memory serves). That the price sold was less than HP sold to bulk resellers.

And often the retailers had no idea the box wasn't eligible as they didn't know that sourcing elsewhere affected it.

The only way was to email the retailer and ask where they sourced their stock from.

Then one well known retailer actually popped onto a forum like this to ask.

But if the retailer posts on their website (like the recent £199-£209 bargain) saying that it's eligible for cashback then I think they'd be obliged to give you a full refund if it weren't.

There was even a case where one online store was selling EU stock to you super low but doctoring your invoice so it looked higher to HP. Still got the email in my inbox somewhere. Wasn't a very well know etailer though.

Brucie bonus update for me this morning. Just had a phonecall from the company I ordered mine from on Friday, and they say there's been a massive price drop this morning, so they're cancelling the current order and placing a new one that's ~£80 cheaper, should still ship tonight and arrive tomorrow, and it's still eligible for the £100 cashback. :)

Argh, I'm super tempted by one of these again. I'd originally been looking at a Synology NAS, but they're at least £50 more now. What sort of OS would I want for one of these? Ideally I'd be using it for media streaming, a torrent client (ideally Transmission) and for back-ups/sharing files across my network. Nothing too hectic.

I've been running ubuntu server on a netbook for a few months now. When my N54L turns up, I'll probably try that again and see how it runs (assuming I can remember how to get it all set up again :)).

Picked one up for £98 today :D couldn't resist.

The 4 x 3TB WD Reds, 8gb ECC and 128GB SSD I now need to finish it off will hike the price up a wee bit though!

Managed to grab one of the N54L's yesterday for £197.94. Happy with one for under £100, and glad I waited!

Any reccomendations for RAM? I'ts going to be used as a FreeNAS server, so need as much as I can put in.
