Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

For some reason the NIC in mine has decided that it wants to work in 10/duplex mode :S making all my transfers VERY slow. Has anyone got any idea why this would be happening? I have tried swapping the routers around to give it a direct connection to my laptop and still :( it gives me transfer speeds of 500kb/s or so.

hard set the driver to 1000 half then try full (remember to reboot the router) and server to be safe after each change

remove reinstall driver?

get newer driver?

get older driver?

change the OS?

If i manually force select 100/Full it just uses 10/half speeds still :S

Just trying a few different network cables now. I didn't think i still owned any crossover cables, but one could have got mixed up with the rest i suppose!

Got the latest chipset/network card/graphics card drivers too. Still only getting 3,000 kbps ish. :(

- I just installed the latest driver from i think May. I could do remove and reinstall.

- Does anyone have an older driver for the network controller?

- I dont have any other OS bar windows server 2008 R2, but it is an supported OS so worst comes to worst i will call HP helpdesk!

Having a problem with mine where it will just dissappear off the network for 5-30 seconds and then reappear. Very strange, but it happens quite frequently. When it is connected then I can get average 100 MB/s transfer speeds, bursting to approx 120Mb.

Any idea where I should be looking?

Driver from September here, also there is a firmware update on the same page, my box didn't need the upgrade but worth checking.

I could cry

Thanks to personal problems (and a two week tussle with a 4 letter company who I'm never shopping with again, for anything) I've not been able to get one.

Is there anything that people would recommend as a plan B?

There really is nothing out there that competes with the price of this little box after cashback. The new one looks a good little box but it's not cheap without cashback.

I tried to buy a second one (greedy, I know) for offsite backups, and ended up getting a refund as they ran out of stock. I've seen some come into stock and then vanish again in a couple of days No hinting and the trend seems to be that the price is creeping up. I guess others are trying to get in before the cashback offer finishes. Meanwhile I've had the email confirming acceptance of my cashback claim and I'm just waiting for the actual cheque.
In case anyone is interested, for my offsite backups I have a site to site vpn. I have a freenas box at both locations. The remote machine has "wake on RTC" in the bios and switches on at a set time. Cron jobs kick in a few minutes later to rsync, and then a shutdown script runs that waits for all the rync jobs to finish. That script also emails me the log files so I can keep an eye on it.

After a search on multiple vendors this evening, I take it this server is out of stock everywhere across the land unfortunately ....:( Unless someone can mention a seller with stock.. Cheers.

Was getting around 60Mb/sec when I first set this up, now getting about 22. Also sending files around 10gb has been ok, though slow obviously, but I tried a 17gb one and twice it crashed the little microserver.
Internet search ideas leads to 1) disable ipv6 and 2) dodgy nic drivers. :/

[Edit] interesting, uninstalled windows search 4 and IE8 and it doesnt seem to crash anymore. Now all I need to do is fix the slow speeds. Perhaps I should uninstall some more updates? :P

I have the same problem, with sustained file copying over the network, my HP Microserver hangs too. Tried many things, including your suggestion to remove IE8 and Search 4, but still have the problem.

How many drives to you have? Any PCIe cards installed? Memory upgraded? What operating system?

I dont get this (easy 100MB/s sustained network xfer) but my microserver keeps dissappearing off the network for 20-30secs at a time. very annoying. I'm using the standard windows 7 driver. Anybody think changing the driver would be of benefit, and to what driver?

Sorry if you already checked this but open up your network connections, and poked around the settings for your network adapter - check the power settings for it, and disable many of the network adapter offload functions.

If that makes no sense/you cannot find it, post again and will boot a Windows 7 PC and document it better.
