Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

(ask for help)

I am seriously struggling with FreeNas here.. and I cant find any answers with google.. someone help please.

Im trying to install FreeNas onto Usb. Simple enough.

Boot the Iso, fine. Install, fine. Restart and try to boot the Usb? No. Just No.

Ive no idea why It just refuses to even try and boot off the usb after install.. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

Have you checked your BIOS settings to make sure you've enabled USB as the first boot device?

For anyone interested, Lifehacker has recently posted a really interesting article on how to store your Proliant server away in a neat looking cupboard. I must confess, I'm tempted to build one myself after reading the article! :)

Just installed/setup WSE2012 and copying some data to it over gigabit lan.. slightly disappointed in write speeds at the moment varying between 8-19MB/s. Samsung 7200RPM 1TB HDD its going onto so not too bad.

Any ideas why so low?

To add further.. Ive now after googling the universe, got it running a lot faster, but only for a few seconds. At the start of the transfer to. it will peak up to 90-100MB/s.. then after a few seconds it will hang and drop 20, then again again and again untill down at under 10MB/s.

Whilst this happens, the server also becomes virtually unusable. It seems like its maxing a cache or something but Im out of ideas!

Really appreciate anyones inputs or experiences on this!

Does anyone know if there a form I can fill out online with HP for cash back or is the paper one and post the only option?

Get the form, fill it in, scan and send it to [email protected].
For me and someone else in my office they returned the following within 10 minutes of sending...

Hi

Thank you for your claim.

Please allow seven days for your claim to be processed.

Kind Regards

Are you still running ESXi? Try performing some local benchmarks to see if it's a LAN speed issue.

I was curious about this and went a'googling. There is real lack of information about EVC and microservers, presumably because no-one is running a full virtual center environment on mixed gen boxes, except for you :p

I found 1 post that suggested that the N36 is classed as a Gen 1, but it was vague at best.

As you've surmised, I'm pretty sure the ESX hosts that are getting 'downgraded' need to be clear of VM's. I did it at work when we added new servers to our cluster, but can't remember whether a reboot was also needed

Well I can confirm that Gen 1 works. Kinda...
I can't fully test it yet but certainly I have enabled it on the cluster. I spent maybe 7 hours trying to do it as my issue is having only 2GB of RAM and somehow needing to turn off all VM's to enable EVC. That's fine but when the VC is a VM itself?
vMotions are failing during the transfer although this could be that my new server is starved of memory.

The principle is there though that vMotion is being allowed between my N36L and N54L when EVC is set to AMD Opteron Generation 1.
