Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I'm using the b120 raid controller and not experiencing any undue fan noise, its rather quiet if I may say so.

I think if you run in AHCI mode, the server cannot monitor the temperatures correctly and automatically ramps the fans up?

The fan noise does seem to be due to the b120i in AHCi mode.

I wanted to try Xpenolgy in SHR mode so it is using AHCI and don't want to rebuild it. I have a single spare hard drive, I have read it is possible to run a single disk as raid 0 so will try a setup like that and see if it makes a difference.

I haven't been able to work out how to monitor the fan speed, any pointers on how to do it?

I think even if you do that (single disk, radi0), dsm does not have the b120i drivers so it still doesn't work for reducing fan noise, hence needing the custom ESXi image, that does contain the drivers, and installing xpenology/dsm on top of that.

That could be the case, ESXi is probable the only option. From what I have read in it suggests that you may need to add memory and have ESXi on a separate drive from the server software.

But doesn't the bios do that automatically? Irrelevant of OS drivers... like nearly all modern computers I'm aware of...

Both of mine quiet their fans well before they boot any operating system & the load/temperature is monitored by the hardware/bios... underneath any O/S drivers...

To get the fan speed under control the only way I have read that works correctly is to use the ILO drivers from hp with at least one disk as RAID 0 which should reduce the fan speed to 6% under normal conditions. Unfortunately the ILO drivers are only provided for a few enterprise linux distros and ESXi.

I have tried ubuntu 12.04, but didn't manage to get it to boot.

Well... the fans are idling at 6% for me with no drivers... before drivers even load...

I did, however, configure the single hard drives to operate as raid-0 arrays considering the sata raid card will not allow JBOD.

I didn't try switching the whole thing to AHCI like some people have...

As for ILO licensing... why are people buying the advanced ILO licensing or even suggesting to?

The basic monitoring and power button functionality work with the basic/free/included license... what are you getting with the extra paid license that you need for home use? I can't see any value in the extra functionality for home...

They are end of life now. So they will be all locked away in data centres. We will have to wait a year or so for servers to be decommissioned and stripped. Market will be flooded with them then!

hi,

I have 2x 2TB drives and 2x 3TB drives in N54L. I want to set up those 3TB in RAID 1.

what's the best way to do it? I have controller currently in AHCI mode and from what I briefly read it's either re installing windows server after switching to RAID mode or setting up software RAID within windows.

I would like to avoid reinstall if possible.

thanks

Just took delivery of my Gen 8. Wow, it is really built like a tank! Even when compared to the previous N54L.

It shipped with the J06 06/06/2014 BIOS which I believe includes the AHCI fan fix. I am going to run the latest Proliant Service Pack (2015.04.0) over it first as I think they may have been some other firmware updates.

As long as it's connected to the internet... you can just run the built in deployment wizard and run updates that way... very easy, only the initial update search can take some time.

Just picked up a G1610T Gen8 for home as I was going to buy a 4 bay NAS but this worked out a lot cheaper! Was on offer for $349 (180ukp).

Now just have to wait for the thing to be delivered :(
