Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Yes I installed 5.5 then applied update 1 and 2 as they came along. I would go straight for the update 2 integrated one now, or maybe even ESXi 6 (it's not much different).

I came back this week an my N40L seems to have given up the ghost.
No power whatsoever, I've tried a different plug and no joy.

I'm not sure what type of power supply it has either :(
I think I might spend some extra cash and build a bigger server with 6 x 4tb

Ooops :( I'm sure the data will still be OK, at least :)

I'm just in the process of installing XPEnology on one of my Gen8s... 4x 6TB WD Reds delivered this morning :D

EDIT: Looking good :) ... even while parity check running ;)

Web interface is nice and nippy too... although I suppose I should expect it to be as it's quite the CPU & RAM upgrade from the DS213js that I'm used to

Got a problem :(
Yesterday i started to set up the Gen8 properly as a nas using the Synology method with 2x 2TB disks in JBOD mode, all set up fine (don`t need mirroring etc as not critical data)

But now my main pc can`t see the Gen8 to drag and drop the files onto :(

Can login via firefox etc and a different pc CAN see the Gen8 in windows but not my main pc.Have been through all settings again and again and have got no where, any suggestions on how to fix this please?

P.S. Before yesterday I had 1 disk in the gen8 to play with and all was working fine my main pc could see and access the gen8

Could be windows... sometimes the search simply doesn't find the devices... even if you have a static IP set... that's just Windows being Windows TBH... nothing to do with the NAS... it's helped significantly by a WINS server on your network... but most home networks wouldn't bother with something like that.

You can create shortcuts though... if you have a dynamic IP - then use the NetBIOS name... the name you set it to when setting up...

I named mine:

NAS - with IP 10.0.0.10
TV - with IP 10.0.0.11
Movies - with IP 10.0.0.12

Open windows explorer and in the search bar at the top, you can simply type any of the following to get to the NASes:

\\NAS\
\\10.0.0.10\
\\TV\
\\10.0.0.11\
\\Movies\
\\10.0.0.12\

Of course, the IPs will only work if you know what the IP is and it is static... or dynamic but you track it. I manually choose/set those IPs, so don't use those as a reference for yours or anything.

The name should work even if it's dynamic.

I recommend setting the IP to static though, it will help all your network devices locate it much easier.

Then on Win/Linux/OSX... you can create shortcuts very easily like this:

Simply grab the icon i've pointed to with the top arrow & drag and drop it into the favourites icons on the left after you have navigated to the folder you want to add to favs:

Or take that same link & create a mapped network drive from within My Computer:

Yeah had/has a fixed IP
anyway for the moment all is as it should be,copying files to the nas atm
Not sure I like the idea of the ext4 file system tbh
I set JBOD so I would have some chance of retrieving files if it all went **** up,but would be a lot easier to plug NTFS drives into windows and recover that way

Can the G1610t use 4tb drives with no issues?
I'm tempted to buy 1 and put 4x4TB drives in, running unRaid

LOL... quite literally 11 posts above yours :p

You can read Ext4 under Windows... only you need an extra piece of software and/or driver for it, that's all... quick google if you ever need that option and you'll find many solutions.

Ext4 is faster than NTFS... noticeably.

I've lost less data running on the likes of Ext4 than I have from NTFS... so my personal experience & enterprise experience (most companies with techies in the know use Linux-based fileservers... even Microsoft use CentOS for their download servers!)
