Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Has anyone looked at the micro server Dell Poweredge T20 as an alternative/replacement for their HP? It works out at £79.99 after cashback, has a dual core 3ghz Intel chip, 4GB RAM, 4 bays with ability to run 0/1/5/10 RAID off the Intel controller, 2 x 2.5" bays for SSD, and also has 2 PCI-e and a PCI slot. Granted it's a tad larger in size than the HP and not quite as ermm "pretty" but seems a decent alternative at that price point with RAID5 by default without an additional card?

My Gen8 decided it was going to forget how to talk USB last night, no MicroSD slot, internal USB either.

Required a hard power off, 30 second wait, power on to get them back. Worrying.

I must admit, my overall experience with this server has been nowhere near as user friendly as it's N40L/N54L predecessors. :(

I've just changed my Gen7 HP for a T20. Mine has a Xeon 1225V3, 16GB RAM and I've added a 120GB SSD for boot and VM's. Yesterday I took it to work to test some disaster recovery and had it running ouyr DC, Exchange Server and SQL server without any issues. It seems snappier than our rack server!

RAID5 on these boxes is a bit of a nightmare. Read speeds are rubbish! I installed one recently for a client who uses Sage and any searches they did crashed or times out. I did some googlefu and found it's quite common.

Otherwise it's a cracking server.

Update.

So my Dell T20 idles at 17W, then jumps to around 27-30W while streaming Gravity at 1080p across my LAN. I've not had multiple streams yet but will report back when I do.

How are you streaming? To what device?

I have a large raid array in my desktop and stream to a popcorn hour A110 but the latter is getting old and I want the large amount of film data out of what should be my gaming PC, so looking for alternative solutions.

Via Plex server to Now TV box. If I stream to my PC so no transcoding I get similar results. I'll test with multiple streams later.

I've just copied 700GB of data from one drive to another and it never went above 30Watts.

Sorry another question, how big is the dell? Normal PC size?

They're quite small. 17.5cm wide X 36cm-ish high X 43.5CM long.

Remove the Linux disk and see if it boots to VMWare. Or mount GParted and flatten the Linux disk.

Looks like rather than that it just didn't like the USB stick for some reason ... created it without error but it was bootable which is why the system was going to the Linux again. With a different USB stick all is well.

Dammit guys, now that you made me look into a Dell T20 I'm seriously considering it to replace the N54L - or to live alongside it for a while at least... Hmmmmmm

My T20 lived along side my N54L for 24 hours, then I turned it off. It's going to a guy I work with.

I loved the HP but the Dell is fantastic.

Says a lot for the Microserver tbh...

Wonder what the Gen9 will bring, if they do a Gen9, given that they have just dropped some new SKU's for the Gen8 a Gen9, at least for the near future looks unlikely..

Just upgraded my N54L to Freenas 9.3.1.

Was a spot of bother as I had 9.1.1 on a 2GB stick, and 9.3.1 recommends at least an 8GB drive.

Steps were:
Saved config.
Installed 9.1.1 to new drive
Loaded config
Upgraded 9.1.1 to 9.3.1 via CD installation.

Hey presto!
Now to get some more RAM.

If there was a Gen9 it would likely have been unveiled at Discover London.
