Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

Hi All
I am still unsure on what Hard Drives to get for this machine, if I go 2TB per drive I presume the Samsung F4's are the way to go?
If I want to go with 1TB per drive are the F3's ok ?

If you go with 1TB disks, and I'd really recommend getting the biggest you can instead, then low power drives would make more sense than F3's.

The fan on this thing is starting to annoy me one. Is it possible to replace with a quieter fan? Any suggestions?

Ok looks lke the F4 are the better option, however buying 4 of these is out of my pocket range at the moment :-(

So if I only get 2 would this work?
Use the hard drive that comes with the unit as the OS drive and attach that to the Optical drive SATA Header
Then have 2 of the F4's in the 4bay using the onboard Raid to Mirror the data.
The main use for the server will be to store and act as a file server arround the house for Music/Video/Photo's

According to SPCR it is possible but you have to re-arrange the pins as the HP header pin-out is different to normal.

I plan on getting a Sharkoon Silent Eagle 2000 (read the article to understand why they suggest a ~2000rpm fan) to try a fan swap with and see how I get on.

Edit: I am a moron. The Sharkoon isnt PWM. If you find any PWM fans in the 1800-2000rpm bracket that could fit the bill let me know :)

If you can manage 3 then you can build a RAID 5 array with those and later expand it with one more disk.

I could probably stretch to three yahh, I am not very Familiar with Raid though, I presume it would be a software Raid set up if I use 3 disks, would I beable to Achieve that with Windows 2008 Standard R2 or would you recomend some other software.
Am I right in thing I can use the optical SATA connection as the OS drive?
Thans for your Help

have built mine - I have the 250gb and 2 x hitachi 2tb drives in there.

have put on freenas 8.0 and have just enabled a share with my windows 7 pc.

thought I would copy over some movies to test .... 49 gb of files @ 11mb / second :(

it is wired to my router (although this is Belkin g mimo+ - make a difference?)

the Hp has 5gb ram (I bought a 4gb stick to go with the 1 already present)

any ideas about the slow transfer rate?

just getting my head around freenas ... so maybe Ive missed something ?

Your connected through your router which only has a 100mb switch, limiting you to a max of 12.5MB/s, 11MB/s is about right for a 100mb switch.

Ok after getting sucked in and buying one of these instead of synology nas im wondering whether I can do what I wanted :download nzb via my android phone or home pc and download to hp.
Stick in an old webcam and have it remotely record when i want to the hp.
Dump my films data and music to it.... while it makes a backup at the same time.

Im wondering whether it would have been easier with the synology!

Can the webcam thing work with freenas?
How do i access freenas 8.0 via my android phone when not connected to wifi?

I keep googling but it mostly comes up with previous freenas... or am I better off with another os?

I also bought a couple of domain names.. i can then type these into my browser and connect to the hpwhen not connected to my wifi?

Does anyone know how I can control the fan inside this? or would I need to buy another fan and a dedicated fan controller to put in the bay? I want to speed up the stock fan inside on demand and slow it down when I need to.

Samsung F4's are a safe bet to work well.
Yup I am gonna get F4's think I have decided on using windows 2008 R2, I still would like confirmation that I will be able to connect the Optical header to the hard drive that comes with, I can then mount that in the top bay and keep the 4bay for the F4's and Raid 5 through windows.

Have you tried speedfan? Since the header and fan are PWM I don't see why it wouldn't work, unless of course speedfan doesn't support it. Its free so worth a try.
