Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

A lot of folk are using Kingston value RAM and its doing the job nicely as far as I am aware. I am waiting for mine to arrive so it better work:eek:.

HELP!!

Hopefully somebody can assist with my dilemma...

I have installed W7 64bit on to the original 250GB HDD (all good so far), I have then installed a Hitachi 2TB 3.5" Deskstar Coolspin SATA-III 6GB/s Hard Drive (5900rpm 32MB Cache - HDS5C3020ALA632 254429), but I cannot get the drive to show in the Disk Management Console but it does show in Device Manager>Disk Drives!!:confused:

Anybody have any thoughts on the problem? All help greatfully received

EDIT:
I have now read the whole thread (59 pages!!) & other forums but there is still no answer to my problem, just wondering whether the Hitachi HDD needs 'flashing' as mentioned for the Samsungs to work..

I can't honestly hear the PSU fan.

Strange I can hear my PSU fan, must be because I silenced the main fan. How many hard disks?

I'm running 5x Sammy 2TB F4 Ecos.

I have my microserver, router, switch on the top shelf in our wardrobe with the door shut. Seems pretty cool in there and you can't hear any noise.

cool thanks, it sounds great can't wait to try it out.

I've just got my microserver and waiitng for some ram to install whs2011 on, I have been reading the silentpcreview article on this, great 7 page article on how to get this to quieten down.

He does say that the PSU does make a bit of noise, and there wasn't really much he could do with it. Does the PSU make much noise? I saw a silent 200w psu which is the same size as the ones used for the microserver, only thing is it uses an external brick power pack like you have in laptops, but that doesn't bother me at all, it means that heat will be expelled by the brick instead which means the PSU (and the hard drive next to it) will be a lot cooler.

200w external brick fanless http://us.shuttle.com/barebone/Models/Accessory/PC62.html
120w all internal fanless http://www.fspgroupusa.com/fsp12050gnf-fanless/p/483.html
Although that's going to be something I'll attempt later on. Maybe the current psu will work fine with lots of air slots cut in and fan removed.

Does anyone know if the 120w version will work with the microserver with 4 hard drives loaded up?

With 5x 2TB F4 Eco's idle is about 44 watts and load is around 60 watts so 120 watts would be ample. I would imagine you would need a fairly cool environment with a fanless PSU not sure I would trust one because I have seen too many PSU's go bang.

I've just 'borrowed' a sapphire 1gb version from work.

managed to have a fiddle around with it earlier. Got it installed and seems to be working ok. Running server 2008 r2 and all files are stored locally on microserver drives. Seems a little sluggish in xbmc loading and skipping through files though. I've turned hardware acceleration on as well. Is there something else I should be tweaking in xbmc or server 2008?

Am I right in thinking that the little sticking out bit on the connecter, that's on the right on this picture needs to be filed down or something, I believe I saw pictures of the HP MS connector and it had the bits at the ends.

Edit: Doh! Just swap the connector bit around.. that way you can sell the Fan onto someone else

What sort of Coretemp temperatures have people been getting over the last few days?

Mine is currently 38 with a high of 47 degrees.

It's in a small cupboard with the door shut, so I'd imagine you guys would have lower temps.

Cheers,

G

I'll give it a go, I'll be running a vmware player instance running W7 on it throughout so it may be more intensive than most. What software are you using to track the core temps?

What is special about this Kingston HyperX Blu RAM apart from the price compared to the Kingston Value RAM most people are using in this server which costs £45-6 for 8Gb?

Do you have to remove the heatspreaders to fit in this microserver?
