I'm looking for a broadband connection for my student flat, there will be 3 of us and we just want a connection for everyday browsing, nothing at all too heavy.

We have already looked at the Virgin Media 2MB Cable internet for £10 a month(appealing as no phone line is needed) but it's not available in the area. What good packages are available for ADSL?

I don't really want to take out a BT phone line so i'd rather the price of the internet and the phone be combined in some sort of package.

Any suggestions?

TalkTalk should be ok for general internet that isn't life or death if it goes down.

I believe, line rental, phone calls and broadband is sub £20/m.

Bear in mind that if you go down the BT route (which if you can't get cable is your only real option) you will get slapped with a £125 fee for a new phone line if there has not previously been one in the flat.

TalkTalk or the such are probably worth a look given what you have said your requirements are however I would just point out:

Phone line = £10.50 / month
Be* = £8/month

= £18.50/month so divided between the 3 of you would be around £6.15 a month each, pretty good value IMO for a very good provider and you will get weekend calls for free on the land line.

Also bear in mind that deals like the talktalk one often require you signing up for a 12 month contract which may be an issue if you are only planning on staying in the house for a few months.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I looked at TalkTalk and it says i need a BT Line which i'm not too sure the flat has. The flat itself is brand new..

The B.E option sounds decent, what sort of length is the contract for BT's phone line though? We only have the flat for 40 weeks.

Depends on what package is taken though for the termination fee.

You'll just have to pay the remainder of the contract. I assumed the cheapest deal (and I'm sure you could switch down to this package before you terminated anyhow), so the figure I gave is probably accurate (most basic package, paperless billing).

Say if i wanted to sign up to TalkTalk's UK Weekend broadband plan(£15.49 a month), would i have to get my BT line connected first, if so would BT charge me and how would i go about doing it? Or could i just put an order in for TalkTalk straight away and let them handle it?

Thanks

I really would avoid TalkTalk - Even though you're only going to be doing light browsing, there will be three of you so the lack of bandwidth (TalkTalk often have overcrowding) will be rather chug-worthy if you're all browsing at once.

Be Value is a very good choice for your needs. You'll get a far better service (both in terms of customer service and actual internet service).

Fair enough, will take that advice into consideration. If i was to get Be Value, i would need to get my BT line activated first right?

i cant see how your going to get out of the 12 Month minimum period for the line rental... i'd just go along with the idea of cancelling the line rental and broadband once the 40 weeks are up.

If it's a new build, even though there's a phone line in the property, the chances are that you'll still have to pay the £125 (For them to connect it up either at street level or exchange level, or both). The easiest way to tell is plug a phone in, if there's no dial tone, you'll almost certainly be paying the £125.

You can however spread this £125 over 12 months with your phone bill.

It may also be worth enquiring if there is anyway to get a discount on the line "install", a friend mentioned to me a while ago, he knew someone who had theirs subsidised down to £35 by signing up to an 18 month call package.

If they're already trying to reduce their contract from 12 months, extending it to 18 doesn't really seem that good a plan for them.

In regards to the charge, argue and argue again with BT if they try to throw it your way. Speak to the reconnections/returning customers team. Eventually you'll be able to avoid the fee.
