Any cooks out there recommend any knifes that are good for effortlessly cutting a onion or other root vegetables?

Dont want to pay a fortune so whats the best knife under say a tenner preferably under a fiver.

I use a Global GS-5 for such vegetables. I don't think a tenner will get you very far for a decent knife though.

I bought a knife and chopping board set from wilkinsons for £3, think it was on offer. Came with three knives, the metal of the blades goes all the way up the handle and is riveted in, they are surprisingly sharp as well.

Aah student life:o

Surely its worth saving a bit and investing in a good set - they are something you will possibly use every day. I know I would rather wait and invest a bit more in good kit.

I use an old bone handel bread knife its years old but beats any of this new rubbish ,still very sharp in fact I sliced of the tip of my finger a couple of days ago ,my gf found it stuck to the back of her hand !

Hmm actually i wonder if i can sharpen my current chef knife that i bought awhile back only was a quid but it would be decent if it was sharp. Been viewing a few sharpening stone vids on youtube and doesnt look too hard, and surprisingly very quick to do with just as quick results. Would it be worth having a go if so anyone know what type of shop in town would do sharpening stones and if so what to buy?

Think its stainless steel yeah.

Edit: Hmm dont think thats what u meant lol.. If its a steel thing for sharpening then no.

for that price you wont find an amazing knife. get one of those veg cutting things that they always advertise on shopping channels.

Funnily enough my mother just bought me a set of knives (made me give her 5 cents for it tho since you are not supposed to gift a knife :) )

I had been saying for ages that I wanted to get a decent set of knives because the cheap ones are just no good.

She got me an Eclipse Professional set and I must say they are excellent.

Perfect balance, one piece stainless so food can't get into any cracks and they are razor sharp

They go retail for around 250 quid but well worth the money IMO as a good set of knives will get used often and last a lifetime if taken care of properly.

save £40 and get one good chefs knife. You will be amazed at the diffrence. All these people saying you can get 6 knifes for a tenner and they are sharp have no idea what sharp is.

Victorinox. You'll get a decent knife for less than £15. But you'll need a steel to keep it in good shape, so budget £25 minimum.

Here: http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/ProductList.asp?TopGroupCode=C2&ParentGroupCode=S189&GroupCode=121

I rate this highly http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/p...&BrandGroupCode=&BrandGroupName=&ShopByBrand=

worn out 2 now I'm on my third. Once the serrations have worn off you get a great smooth knife.

Also haveone of these : http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/p...&BrandGroupCode=&BrandGroupName=&ShopByBrand= but 9 times out of 10 I'll use the slicer above. It's really versatile.

this

is the best chef's knife i have ever used (not mine a guy i used to work with had it)

anyway back on topic.

take a look here

http://www.cooks-knives.co.uk/index.html

i would say the majority of the knives on that site will be of a higher quality than the generic one's from wilko or supermarket. May give you a better idea of what to spend.
