My diet is pretty good, but six months in a new job with little mobility has piled on a few pounds and really ruined my figure (which used to be fairly good), have just started back at the gym about 2months ago. Was wondering if anyone can recommend a really effective exercise regime for cutting the fat?

Thanks.

medium paced morning cardio on an empty stomach (feel free to have 1 or 2 strong black coffees 30 mins prior to exercise)

HIIT in the afternoon or evening

balanced weights program - 3 sessions a week.

What Morba said. Just to add though, no sugar in that coffee otherwise you'll be burning carbs as opposed to burning fat.

I think part of my trouble is that Im going for too intense cardio (particularly in my running), and burning too much muscle. This is good advice guys, from next week I should have much more free time for the gym, so morning cardio can definitely be pursued.

Edit: Not a coffee person so no troubles on that front.

I take it he means something along the lines of an ECA stack which is a combination of ephedrine, caffeine, and Aspirin. Basically when all the parts are taken together in the correct ratios it can help to burn fat but its not a magic pill and should only really be used once youve sorted your diet and exercise just to shift the last few pounds

I'm in a similar position, but do all my training in the evening as morning cardio makes me feel awful for the whole morning for some reason. Also hate getting out of bed especially to do something as boring as cardio. Getting out of bed earlier would require going to bed earlier, and I love my evening time too much for that.

It all boils down to willpower though and I suppose I could actually free up more evening time by doing morning cardio, as it would mean I only needed three evenings at the gym per week rather than five.

Anyway OP - keep up the weights and don't go all out cardio as the extra muscle will help shift extra calories.

just out of curiosity....after doing cardio in the moring...i take it that the diet for the rest of the day will be fairly low in carbs and fat...so that the fat stays off....correct? Hi protein ....and plenty of veg do the trick?

For what it's worth I've never noticed much from oral Yohimbine, found much better results with topical products. All the oral stuff did was increase my blood pressure and I normally have perfect BP readings.
fair enough, personally I'd go with ephedrine, but its psychological side effects make it hard to recommend.

Why HIIT in the afternoon/evening? I am cutting at the moment and do HIIT in the evening as it stands (only 10 mins on exercise bike - but still intense enough atm) - I was intending to do this in the morning before work but so far haven't mustered up the willpower to do so.

But - why not HIIT in the morning as opposed to a standard bout of cardio?

I think HIIT in the morning is an issue because it requires some carbs in order to be able to do it effectively, and most people can't get up early enough before work to have carbs long enough before an HIIT session. I think.

pretty much, its all about being correctly fuelled up for our cardio session.

What is AMSS btw?

I think morning cardio unfuelled at say 135-150bpm (resting is 56bpm, 220-age = 202) for 45mins, then HIIT in the evenings say;

5mins gentle jog 8-10kph
30secs 15kph
30secs 10kph
repeating these alternating 30second cycles
then 5mins cool down.

Sound good?

Possibly slow speed? Usually if you're running on fats (like in the morning or on a ketogenic diet) you'll do your cardio at a lower pace as fatty acids can't be oxidised into fuel as easily as carbs can so it can cost you muscle.
