Good decent knife

Is there a decent sharpening tool out there that will give a nice polished edge?

I have a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker and it's a fantastic bit of kit.

It sharpens and polishes perfectly, and once you get the hang of using one you could literally shave with your knives if you wanted to.

Good stuff, I'll look into them. I get my knives sharp enough to shave with on my whetstone but it takes me forever.

I'm just looking to buy one knife for slicing and cutting things. Things like bread knifes and other luxuries can wait.

Could anyone link me to the best that I could get for £50, or would you simply recommend that I just slog on with what ive got and invest in the future?

Unless you are a budding chef or Mums buying it just buy a god damn knife that cuts things. Why spend 50 quid on a kitchen knife when you could spend a tenner and spend the rest on a PC upgrade or lend it to aa6972's love interest ?

I was thinking along the line of if I buy a decent knife, then its one that I can take pride in eg it will last me a good number of years and can be something I can rely on.

Though your idea of just spending a tenner is tempting. :o

victorinox. good knives. good prices. You can buy the worlds most expensive awesome knife , but unless you also buy a steel, it'll become the worlds most expensive blunt knife after as little as 1 or 2 uses. 12-15 for a knife, 10 or so for a steel and you should be set.

this: http://www.nisbets.co.uk/products/productdetail.asp?productCode=C680 plus the little veg knife set for less than a tenner + a steel an you'll be sorted.

In my opinion unless you are a professional or a survivalist a knife is a knife. You could get a quality knife for all your intents and purposes for about 20 quid. If you really have a passion for cooking then spend a little extra and enjoy the feel of it when you use it. The best knife I have ever come across are by far the Kai Shun japanese knives using carbon and cobalt inner layers which mean they hold an edge extremely well. They are probably a lot more money than you are prepared to spend but a Kai Shun is something that will definately last you a lifetime and a knife that becomes very much an extension of yourself. For the 50 quid mark most knives will perform the same task of cutting things but without the pride and feeling of a professional bit of kit that you spent your hard earned cash on.

Those victorinox knives look interesting. Anyone know what steel they use? If its the same as the stuff they use for their multi tool its a bit soft but it'll be good enough for cutting veg and meat.

Glad this thread came up as I have been looking in to them again for the next few days.

A wall-mounted magnetic block to practice throwing them at Hatori Hanzo style should be considered too ;)
