Good documentaries

A few more cracking doc. I've seen over the years:

Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills (1996)

WPzP6NW.jpg

Berlinger and Sinofsky's documentary of a gruesome triple murder in West Memphis, Arkansas and the subsequent trials of three suspects, takes a hard look at both the occult and the American justice system in 'small-town' America. Three teenagers are accused of this horrific crime of killing three children, supposedly as a result of involvement in Satanism. As in their previous documentary, things turn out to be more complex than initial appearances and this film presents the real-life courtroom drama to the viewer, as it unfolds.

How to Survive a Plague (2012)

vajDGjC.jpg

In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, the disease was considered a death sentence affecting communities, like the LGBT ones, whom many in power felt deserved it. This film tells the story of how militant activists like ACT-UP and TAG pushed for a meaningful response to this serious public health problem. As the activists struggled against political indifference, religious hostility, corporate greed and apparently skewed scientific research priorities with determination and sheer audacity, they produced a political wave that would lead to not only an effective treatment regime, but would advance LGBT rights beyond anyone's expectations.

Deep Water (2006)

yxURk2p.jpg

DEEP WATER is the stunning true story of the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race, and the psychological toll it took on its competitors. Sponsored by the Sunday Times of London, the much-ballyhooed event attracted a field of nine, including amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst, who set out to circumnavigate the globe in late 1968. Battling treacherous seas and his own demons, Crowhurst almost immediately comes apart as he faces the isolation of nine months on the high seas. Part adventure yarn and part metaphysical mystery, DEEP WATER is an unforgettable journey into one mans heart of darkness.

Bus 174 (2002) Ônibus 174 (orig. title)

0Wl1A1O.jpg

Documentary depicts what happened in Rio de Janeiro on June 12th 2000, when bus 174 was taken by an armed young man, threatening to shoot all the passengers. Transmitted live on all Brazilian TV networks, this shocking and tragic-ending event became one of violence's most shocking portraits, and one of the scariest examples of police incompetence and abuse in recent years.

Don't worry if you're not into skateboarding, I'm not that interested in it tbh but this doc. is simply amazing! Must see imho:

All This Mayhem (2014)

3c81Py7.jpg

All This Mayhem is a searing account of what happens when raw talent and extreme personalities collide. In this unflinching, never-before-seen account of drugs and the dark side of professional skateboarding, brothers Tas and Ben Pappas' intense bond and charisma take them from the pinnacle of their sport into a spiralling world of self-destruction.

I recently enjoyed Digital Cowboys which is the story of the early days of Compaq. If you remember the 80's era of PC's and computing then it's worth a watch on Netflix.

Silicon Cowboys is pretty good.
Also check out Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999), although not a documentary it's a great drama based on actual events (Birth of MS & Apple)

The Art Of Killing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Act_of_Killing

Very powerful and well made. Messed up in so many ways.

I watched this with my wife who is Indonesian, she found it very hard to watch and it took a lot for her to believe some of it as true. Now this all happened before her time and Indonesian social norms mean its not the sort of thing that is talked about but it made me think very differently about the old men of her home village and the way they behaved and were treated by everyone else, I joked that they were like gangsters last time we were there.

Recently watched a Manic Street Preachers doc. Not sure if it was their new one called "Escape from History" but it was fantastic anyway. Absolutely worth watching if you're a fan, especially if it's of their early work with Richey.

"Tickled", is by far one of the strangest doc's i've ever seen, it also takes a real sinister turn midway through.
