I'm thinking of finally setting up my NAS I was given a while ago and was looking at getting two 2tb drives but not sure which ones to get. I was going to go for Seagate as my original drive is Seagate and had no issues but I've read that WD make some good drives for longevity.

Would it be better to get two 2tb and do a mirror raid or something, or get a single large 4tb. Could I raid partitions on the 4tb..? Though that wouldn't mitigate full drive failure.

If you mirror two 2TB drives then you get 2TB of available storage. If you want 4TB then you need two 4TB drives. No, you can't RAID partitions on a drive as it's more pointless than a very pointless thing and nothing would permit you to do this.

Seagate Ironwolf drives are very good as are WD Red Plus but avoid WD Red as they use Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) which is a bad thing for NAS use.

Yeah I figured that about partitions, it seemed like a dumb thing to say after I his Post...

The Ironwolf seems to be a decent price so I may grab one 2tb and then get another later. I'm still debating using some kind of backup service or cloud storage like 365 family and split the cost...
