Good electric bike models/retailers?

jebus.. get your arse of the seat and train and you'll beat those "electric" bikes.. there's a guy riding one on my commute from work to home and i beat him uphills and on straight road.. funny as hell.. - mind you i can't stand electric bikes/assisted bikes as it looks like it takes all the fun out of cycling/exercising :)

I don't know which side of the argument you personally are with motorcycle helmets, but I can tell you out right you won't find 99% of riders saying they don't want them.

What do you think?
I have said above that if I can cycle just as fast as a biker with a helmet in a 30 mph then I should be wearing one.
Actually, I hang around with a lot of Bikers (it's my scene) and a lot would go out without their helmets if they could.
They are the Biker gangs though.

You are also totally missing the point.
How many bikers, moped riders and motorists do you tell to get off their motorised transport and get on a bike? - oh yeah, you do :)

i dont, a motorbike is a motorbike, car is a car.. but bicycle is meant to be pedaled by you and just because someone has a hill in their commute buying an electric bike is a pointless thing when you can simply attack the hill a few times a week harder and soon it'll be easy to climb.. :)

yes i can't stand people that look for excuses to not cycle.. oh its raining.. oh its snowing.. oh its windy.. oh i've got a hill.. jeez just do it :) i do respect those that try it, good on them.

I was commuting to and from work on Friday in a blizzard because it won't stop me however I can see the beauty of this form of transport because my arthritis is getting worse and I don't know how many years I've got before I need assistance up the hills.

i get it in your case but when 20 year olds sit on an electric bike its just sad.

You're right Dimple, he doesn't get it.

Oh well, more fun for the rest of us!

What if you don't want to train? What if you just want to get to work dressed in a suit, quicker than public transport but not use the car? I'm actually very fit - 45 resting heart rate and vo2max of 73. I "could" commute to work on a regular bike. But I don't want to cycle to work and back. I take the ebike instead of the car, not instead of a regular bike.

Do you think he's bothered?

Why does cycling have to only be for fun/sport or exercise? What's wrong with bikes just being an efficient form of transportation?

Grudas - you sound like the typical macho cyclist, wanting to keep cycling the preserve of the fit and active, showing that your "hard core".

Having been a motorcycle rider for 20 years, I cant say I've ever met anyone that rides that has argued about riding without a lid.

But then I wouldnt class myself as a biker.

But you've got to understand why they are using it as a form of transport.
When I get to work I'm knackered & sweaty but I'm lucky because I've got a sit down job in front of a computer. I have had jobs where I would be driven to work because there was no way I could do exercise and continue with my job but I would then run home 4.5 miles.
There's nothing to stop an e-bike rider from pedaling all the way but just having a bit of help up the hills so they don't arrive knackered & sweating for work and then on the way back they can turn the motor off and get some good exercise in with all the extra weight they are carrying.

why is it not in sports arena.. oh wait.

Because it's an e-bike and not a sport.
Nobody ever claimed it was.

Don't forget that there are many people out there with invisible physical problems. I'm pretty young-looking and would probably be quite happy pedalling gently on the flats, but a slope would easily cause me problems that might echo throughout the day or week. Something like an electric bike would help assuage that.

Well you are being a bit of a commuting transport racist -
Car = OK
Motorbike = OK
Moped = OK
Cycle - OK
Cycle with a motor = Not OK.

Perhaps e-bike riders should wear a big sign saying 'Cheating'.

Anything other than walking is cheating, including cycling. ;)

Every form of transport is simply applying mechanical advantage to make covering distance easier/faster.

depends how you look at it

for me it looks like it takes some of the trauma out of cycling home from work after 8-12 hours of hard labour with the wind in your face and the rain pelting down.

riding on the roads will never be that fun anyway

When I'm commuting or riding for leisure I don't care about speed as much as comfort. I cycle 50 miles a week, but that doesn't change the laws of physics, when your going up a 30 degree hill with a headwind it doesn't matter how fit you are it's going to be a slow arduous task. Taking the strain out of cycling up enormous hills in adverse weather conditions doesn't detract from cycling at all, it adds greatly to it, making it more enjoyable and more accessible.

This time last year I knew exactly what I wanted, did a lot of research and ended up with a really nice road bike for commuting. I had ideas to go out at the weekends but quickly learned that our roads are not fun with constant daily danger stories and I decided to leave it for commuting only. Six weeks ago I had a bad accident waking up in A&E with a dislocated shoulder and realised my bike was not really right for bad weather (I also realise that no bike is good for icy weather). Anyway I bought a Carrera Subway hybrid for my winter bike and feel a lot safer but has it been fun this last 4 months in winter conditions? - no not at all , it's a way to commute. Before last November it virtually poured down every day with me constantly being soaked but hey ho, I'm willing to put up with it. I've also realised that to keep fit I would rather take the safer option of going back to running than doing it on my bike and so an e-Bike would now be ideal but I daren't have a 3rd bike in less than a year :)

Good find.

I now have the Sirocco CD in my possession and it is so much easier cycling up those evil 30% hills, the throttle alone will take me up them, I think delimiting it will be a good idea though to avoid sudden changes in the difficulty of cycling when the motor turns off, if it provides a constant power output all the time then the ride will be a lot smoother.
