Good "end of the world/society" films

I recently worked out that I love this type of film - films where the world as we know it ends, cities are abandoned etc. and the survivors have to struggle in the wasteland that remains....be it by nuclear war, zombies, or plague....just got through watching "Threads" which was an 80s BBC film made about a nuclear attack on Sheffield, pretty grim stuff but it really made you realise that could have happened. Then there's "When the Wind Blows" which was essentially a more personal version of the same thing, and of course the rest like "28 days later", and all the other zombie ones.

Anyone got any recommendations for "apocalypse" films?

Hmmm I have seen all of those apart from Red Dawn....I remember people used to talk about that one....I will check around for that one, might be hard to get. Thanks for that suggestion, keep them coming :D

Nice link Putty, thanks :D

Post-apocalyptic doesn't really interest me - what I am looking for are films specifically about the apocalypse happening.

Googling is good but doesn't really beat personal opinions. Films that have knocked people's t**s off, you know what I mean....bleak, spectacular, whatever.

Day of the Triffids still stands then, almost everyone on earth is rendered blind overnight by large 'walking' killer alien plants.

Threads > *

I suggest you watch this immediately. It's a depressing, worst case scenario type film which is a sort of pseudo documentary. It's fantastic.

The Omega Man, it's a bit like 28 days later, made in 1971 with Charlton Heston, despite being old it's pretty good really.

Reminds of a cartoon I saw years ago, "When the wind blows", not exactly a "nice" cartoon, but pretty powerful.

Great (but oldish now) Stephen King film, its 6 hours long

whatever you do, don't watch Battlefield Earth, worst film ever! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185183/

Surely you have to watch it once to savour just how appalling it really is! And trust me kids, it's a bad as we say :D The Day after Tomorrow is just as bad in my opinion.

Day of the Triffids gets a thumbs up from me though. The first episode is especially atmospheric. In fact the BBC should stop wasting money on childish drivel like Dr. Who and remake this instead. (Grabs keyboard, dons flame retardant suit and leaps in to a bunker!)

Edit - What about the 'new' Battlestar Galactica mini-series? It's not our world that's ending, but same sort of thing really.
