Good Enough For Logic 8?

Hey all,

Just joined here, and I'm loving the amount of information on here, makes a very good read during lunch break

Right, here's my scenario, hopefully some of you seasoned Mac'ers can help me out with this one.

A friend of mine just told me a friend of theirs (blah blah) has a G4 PowerMac for sale, which is the one with two CPU's clocked at approximately 800MHz, and she's upgraded the RAM to 3GB. I'm not sure what OS version is on it, but it does already have Logic Pro 8 installed on it. Is it really good enough for speedy editing, or will I be waiting ages for it to convert and process stuff?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate all help given :)

Chris.

Hi there,
It's the dual 867MHz model, with OSX 10.5.6 on i as a fresh install. 160GB drive, and like I said 3GB of RAM. All of that for £90, which sounds pretty good to me :)

I am going to buy it, as the owner has said it still runs Logic pretty well, and if I really start using it a lot I will get a better Mac. Thanks for the reply,

Chris.

I wouldn't touch it personally. It's not Intel which means you can't install Snow Leopard on it.

I'm only using it for Logic work, so I'm really not bothered about the rest of it. If I was getting one for an all round computer (Which I never would) I would make sure it could run the latest OS.

Steer clear, it'll hinder you. Get the best post-intel machine you can lay hands on if it's at all possible, if it's not, see if you can get a quad core G5 Powermac.

But in all honesty, get an intel if it's even remotely feasible.

Quad Core? I haven't got half a grand at the moment to be honest. And secondly, if this one didn't already have Logic 8 Pro installed I wouldn't buy it. This is simply a system to get my started whilst I am saving money up. I use Logic at College, and this will help me get work done at home and also do my own things. I am going to test it before I buy it, but I have been assured that it runs Logic well, and isn't slow or anything like that. It is getting on, and I will get a better, preferably Intel one when I have the money. This one seemed like too good a deal to pass up on.

Chris.

You guys are being a bit snappy. :/

I'd give it a go mate for £90 its not a bad deal, as long as you don't expect a lot of speed which you have already stated you don't.

Heck you may even find yourself browsing on it and doing other bits and bobs after a while, who knows?

The minimum requirements for Logic 8 is a 1.25GHz Processor, and this one has a total of about 1.7GHz. I know it's still nastily close to the minimum, but it is more than them, so it can't be an utter horror to use. It also has more then enough RAM (3GB) so it should be fine on that side of things.

Like you said BluZiff, it's worth a go.

Chris.

All I'm saying is as a machine to run logic this thing will struggle - it will do, in a pinch, but honestly you'll have to spend a few hundred.

I used a similar spec G4 to produce a newspaper about 5 years ago and it got by just fine, but Quark and Logic are two very different things.
