hi guys, applying thermal paste for the first time to a new build and im not too clear how much is needed..... very lightly like some people say, or half the syringe like some other people say? a little dot in the middle? or a few thin lines of it?

its for the q6600, with the noctua cooler, what should my temp range from, what temp range shouldnt i be in?

I always put a tiny amount on, it only needs to be a very thin layer. a small blob in the middle, then use something like a credit card to spread it over the cpu.

jus do a thin line down the centre and let the weight of the cooler spread it (unless you're lapping, which im assuming you're not).

I've got a noctua at the mo, at stock I was seeing ~30C idle and ~45-50 under load. At 3.6(@1.36v) ~35C idle and 60-65C under load, thats using CoreTemp.

I always apply a small "blob" and proceed to spread it out with my finger in cling-film until it's semi-transparant.

Another vote for the line across the middle method. I have just used it on my new build. I needed to take the heatsink off to re-seat it before I turned it on for the first time. When I took it off I could see that it gave a good even coating with good contact between the cpu and heatsink.

How do you do it if you're lapping the CPU and HS?

small rice grain sized blob and let the pressure of the heatsink spread it has always worked for me.
