'Good' food

sounds fantastic mate, when i can aford it i'll allways make a point of going and picking up some nice food to treat myself, the extra is completely worth it.

One prime example is coffee, i've started getting seriously into decent coffee recently - not the rubish you get at 90% of highstreet coffee shops, but proper, roasted that week, gound the instant before brewing espresso starbucks couldn't dream of making. Just need to fix my grinder now, 6 day old pre-ground is getting me down :(

£30?!

how much was that slab of meat?

it's depressing to see how much of a markup butchers/supermarkets make :(

The Pancetta was £4.80 which is pretty good for 400g of it. The plastic crap they sell in Fenwicks/M&S/Supermarkets is about £1.75/100g.

As I'm a 'preferred customer' (ie I go there a few times a week and he knows I like good cuts of meat/interesting things) I got the pancetta at cost - he got just under a kilo and cut it in half for me and him.

Bearing in mind that I'm doing five courses and a decent cheeseboard for eight people, £30 is not bad in the slightest.

The best thing is that none of it is this 'prepare two days in advance' crap.

The topping for the bruscetta was done this morning and is sitting in the fridge.

The Patatas Bravas takes about an hour to cook so I'll just stick it on when I serve the second course.

Pasta takes 3 minutes(?) to cook. The sauce will take 10-20 including preparation.

Cheesecake is done and cooling now.

Scallops take seconds. Rostis a minute or two.

Nice and easy :)

4th course: a small bit of monkfish on a bed of Patatas Bravas

I had Patatas Bravas in this tiny place in Barcelona that is renowned for serving the best in the world. This is why I can never make them, because they will always turn out worse!

Tend to do more Chinese cooking myself. Lemon chicken being my favourite. There is nothing like heating up a huge wok of oil and deep frying the battered chicken on the spot to impress your guests. That and the sizzling courses as they hit the hot plates.

what a stupid point

id wouldjust like to put this into perspective! there is vast gulf between butchers and supermarkets. most of which i am not going to get into now as i am sure we all know the points. however i run a shop on a farm selling local and organic foods. I can assure you there is vitually no money to be made in this line we do it because we believe in what we sell, unlike s/markets.

Its great to see ppl making an effort with their food, good for you penski, you clearly are an accomplished cook and like to prepare and spend them time and see the enjoyment on ppls faces when they eat your wares!!

My mum makes the wickedest lamb and pork chops, well marinated and cooked properly, haven't tasted an equal, same with her pizzas. No wonder my dads fat lol.

It's criminal how many people just microwave stuff these days.
I'm 20, living on my own, haven't eaten a microwave meal in years.

There's just no excuse, plus, homemade lamb burgers = *drool*

My house don't even have a microwave.

They have their place though. E.g I'll make up a batch of a tomato sauce, use some for that night and split the rest between tubs, freeze them then heat them up when I need them. Sometimes me or my mum don't have the time to make food from scatch.
