Buy a cheaper car for travelling the 110 miles a day back and forth to work. Sound like a good idea?

I was thinking of an old MK4 Golf Diseasel which is £135 on the tax rather than using my 530i which will cost me £120 a week in petrol.

Good idea?

No and Yes

It's all about the sacrifice you're willing to make I guess, I assume you're talking about trying to pick up an SDI (not an sti, you'd try not to pick that up i'd hope) and drive it until it dies? In all honesty it's not a bad idea if you can find a decent car but whenever I'm doing a longish commute i've always been glad for and happy to pay for that extra bit of power. For me the difference between being frustrated every time a road clears and being able to quickly get up to reasonable speed is worth paying for.

I can't wait to get a second car. I hate using my car for work, to point where I even tried buses for a day and nearly died. True story.

My budget is a bit higher in the mondeo/focus territory though.

Having a second car seems like a complete false economy in these example.

It's not as if you both have huge petrol guzzling vehicles, or vintage pristine cars. Is a 530i really going to be a weekend toy? It personally seems like the perfect tool to do 110 miles a day IMO. If petrol costs bother you that much buy a 5**d.

As for buying a mondeo/focus as a 2nd car to a VXR. I think you may prefer you're second car and never want to drive the astra :p

Completely agree with the above.

I agree.
I have 2 cars but that's because my weekend toy is an S2000.

They're pretty bombproof the 1.9's aren't they? If you're willing to get handy with a spanner should the need arise I can't see it being a bad thing. Like you say keeps the miles off the 530i and if you're spending £60 a week instead of £120 it'll soon pay for it self if it's that cheap to buy...

Very similar MPG though. Plus the second car is so I can have a proper weekend car.

Get a proper weekend car then. An Astra VXR is not a weekend car, it's a hot hatch, something that fits 4 adults in, can do a full shopping trip, it's usable every day!!

What? I'm always preaching about getting a RWD/2 seater car next for a proper weekend car.

I need a family car seen as I have family to run about. Once I get round to re-listing the VXR I will be out for another family runabout and then my own car that has no other purpose other than to have fun in and maybe take it to these OcUK track days I keep missing.

It's not that cheap to buy mind, a 400 quid mk4 golf diesel must be screwed surely...

Quite likely - £1k would be plenty though, cheap for something that although dog slow will go on forever....slowly

Bah, its been sold!

There is a Golf GTI but its got 115BHP, which seems rubbish to me. and probably won't be that good on the fuel.

I'm not looking to replace my BMW and I am used to plodding along in a heavily loaded Renault Trafic, so light speed is not that important to me.

Any more recommendations? Ideally I want something which isn't silly on the car tax, so maybe a Laguna Dynamique?
