Good idea or bad?

The Skoda Octavia from above seems like a good shout. Cheap in price, but not a "cheap" product.

I've heard the 1.9 VAG diesel is meant to be very reliable, but dag's like a mothertrucker. If you're on the motorway though, i don't think you'll care.

From your brief, it seems like you're looking for a cheap motorway cruiser, that will give good MPG and will be reliable as it can so you dont want to have to start spending the money saved on repairing it. I think a 1.9 Octavia/Passat would fit the bill?

Buy a cheaper car for travelling the 110 miles a day back and forth to work. Sound like a good idea?

I was thinking of an old MK4 Golf Diseasel which is £135 on the tax rather than using my 530i which will cost me £120 a week in petrol.

Good idea?

You've not really done the maths have you though?

How much per year with the Golf save in fuel? Then subtract from that tax, insurance, MOT and servicing, and see if it is worthwhile.

If you want to actually save money, consider trading your car in for something cheap and economical that isn't an old pile of Golf.

To be honest the car you already have was built for long trips whereas eco stuff was not. Will you really save enough for this to be worth doing?

Thats what I am struggling to work out. Realistically, I have broken it down like this:

BMW
£285 Tax
£450 Insurance
£1040 Cheap tyres
£5868 Petrol
Total - £7643

Passat
£170 Tax
£305 Insurance
£628 Dunlop Tyres
£3496.80 Fuel
Total - £4599.8

You are right though, my 5 is built for long motorway cruises, but looking at the above figures, I am struggling to justify it :(

My other thought it chop the 5 in for something a bit nicer which I will use for everything, including family holidays.

But you have to pay for tax and insurance for the 530i even if you don't use it for work. You could reduce the tyre bill with smaller wheels for next to nothing, etc.

In reality the real additional cost of just using the 530i over two cars is the extra fuel, tyre wear and additional maintenance. This will likely be less than you think, and probably worth paying to not have to commute for hours a day in a pile of junk.

This is the other good idea.

What do you replace a 5 with other than another 5 or a 7?:D

The 18s on my car already look too small without going for 17s :) But to be honest, its the fuel bill which is scary.

£1500 you can convert your 5 series to gas and effectively half your fuel bill.

and £260 each for a cheap tyre? you sure? :P

Now this WILL save you money!

Having 2 cars tends to be a luxury, and if you are worried about money, generally it's not the best idea to have a 5 series for weekend use only...

I often contemplate selling my ST and buying a sub £3k car that's much cheaper to run, while pocketing the difference (£6k). So I am able to save more for my house deposit. I need a lot of persuasion to do this however! It's going to be hard.
