Good japanese films you can recommend?

I'm a massive Asian movie fan.

Brother is a good movie, i actually watched it at the cinema. Loved it.

It's Yakuza based. Seriously, It's not to be missed.

The usual that have already been mentioned also need to be watched.

Also add to the list the Vengeance trilogy.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Oldboy
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

I recommend NOT watching ichi the killer with a 14 year old girl

Takeshi Kitano makes great, great films.

Sonatine, Hana-bi, Violent Cop. There are more, but I can't remember the names at the moment. Watch them all.

Also, I realise we're listing gory, adult stuff here, but surely she wouldn't object to any Studio Ghibli awesomeness? (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke)

Obviously I don't know the 14 year old in question but were I in the OPs position I don't think Oldboy would be my second endeavour with her into Asian cinema.

If we're recommending Anime then you have to stick on Paprika, there's loads of other things I could recommend but this ones just an all round winner; first 5 minuets and you'll both be hooked.

Ichi contains Very graphic rape. Which is the main reason I'd avoid it.

Old boy as you say, maybe be not a good second movie.

Spirited away is a lovely movie, and anime.

i haven't seen Paprika myself, So i think I may give that one a look.

I had a quick scan of the post and didnt see anyone mention "Audition" quite a slow film but keep with it till the end, if she likes gore then its one to watch...about sex scenes i think there is nudity int he film.

Another film which is totally different and was out this year in japan was a film called "The Magic Hour" which i watched over there at the cinema and was quite funny in places (it is a comedy)

Another is a film called "Tampopo" which is a comdey as well although the jokes may not translate across.

A korean film "Take Care of My Cat" I watched a while back now which i enjoyed might be a good one too watch as it follows a group of girls from leaving school through to getting jobs.

A chinese film called "Dumpling" is probs one for you as the content might not really be suitable for a 14 year old girl to watch as it has sex scenes, abortion and cannabilism in it.

hope they will keep you busy

You cant suggest that for a 14 year old girl, even I'm not tempted to watch it from the disturbing things I've heard that happen in it.

I take your point there but some people are reccomending some pretty gorey films as well. The film aint that bad i think, just a bit cringe worthey at the end.

so to the origninal poster....please watch them before letting your 14 year old watch them.

thanks

For a different Japanese film I'd recommend Densha Otaku (aka Train Man) ... the casting of the film is a bit suspect compared with the TV series but it's still a nice watch.

It's available on R1 DVD and a nice modern romance story might make a change from all this gore :)

ok having now watched them, the 2 death note movies (the live versions not the anime) aren't too bad either.
